Europe’s ‘Super Volcano’ Could Be Awakening

The supervolcano is located under the Laacher See, a caldera lake in the Eifel mountain range, 15 miles from Koblenz and 30 miles from Bonn, the old capital of West Germany. If it did go off, it would cover everything in ash from England and Denmark to the north of Italy in a billion tons of hot ash and magma.

Because it’s only 390 miles from London, and could bury Southern England, the possibility of this bomb going off at any time has people outside of Germany worried as well. 

The volcano erupts every 10 to 12,000 years. Because it last went off 12,900 years ago, it’s way past due.

It covered 620 square miles of land with ash and rocks and several small earthquakes in the region last year indicate that it could be awakening from its deep sleep.

The volcano is currently “hidden.” Following the last eruption, long ago, the the land collapsed and formed what is today called The Laacher See. There are some lovely pictures of Laacher See, showing some gorgeous homes along the mouth of the lake.

…Meaning those homes are along the mouth of a volcano, and would be the first to go.
