A 14-year-old Michigan teen escaped with his life after he asked for directions from a homeowner he did not personally know, and the homeowner shot at him.

A man reportedly shot at a black teenager in the suburbs of Detroit, for simply knocking on his front door and asking for directions to school.

What are the details of the incident?

According to WJBK-TV, 14-year-old Brennan Walker missed his bus Thursday morning after he overslept like many other teenagers do on occasion.

Walker began his fateful trek to school, and as his mother had previously taken away his mobile phone for an undisclosed reason, he had no way to know how to get to the school on foot.

Walker was reportedly attempting to follow the bus route to school when he decided to stop at a house and ask for directions.

Walker said that a frightened-looking woman answered the door after he’d knocked on her door.

“I got to the house, and I knocked on the lady’s door,” Walker told WJBK. “Then she started yelling at me and she was like, ‘Why are you trying to break into my house?’ I was trying to explain to her that I was trying to get directions to Rochester High. And she kept yelling at me. Then the guy came downstairs, and he grabbed the gun, I saw it and started to run. And that’s when I heard the gunshot.”

The shot missed Walker and he ran to find a place to hide. When he finally felt safe, he broke down in tears.

What happened to the suspect?

Shortly after the incident, Oakland County Sheriff Deputies arrived at the home and took the suspect — a 53-year-old man who reportedly fired the shot at Walker — into custody, where he has been held pending a Friday arraignment.

The suspect is reportedly a retired Detroit firefighter, according to WJBK.

Speaking to the station, Walker’s mother, Lisa Wright, said, “I found out later the only reason [the man] missed is because he forgot to take the safety off.”

Wright said her husband is currently deployed in Syria.

The incident was reportedly caught on the homeowner’s Ring doorbell. At the time of this writing, the security doorbell footage has yet to be released.

What did the teen’s mom say?

“One of the things that stands out, that probably angers me the most is, while I was watching the tape, you can hear the wife say, ‘Why did these people choose my house?” Wright told the station. “Who are ‘these people’? And that set me off. I didn’t want to believe it was what it appeared to look like. When I heard her say that, it was like, but it is [what it looks like].”

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard expressed his own disgust at the incident.

“It is just absurd that this happened,” Bouchard said, according to WJBK. “I feel terrible for the young man; I feel terrible for the mom and the anxiety that they had to go through. We are going to ask for every charge permissible for this guy, who stepped up and fired a shotgun because someone knocked on his door.”

“My mom says that black boys get shot because sometimes they don’t look their age, and I don’t look my age,” Walker told the station. “I’m 14; but I don’t look 14.
