Governor of Kogi Voices His Support of the Planned Cattle Colonies

On January 17, Governor of Kogi State Yahaya Bello shared his statement with Vanguard via Petra Onyegbule, his press secretary. In it, he announced that he supported the idea of pioneering planned cattle colonies proposed by the federal government, as this would be beneficial to the people living in the area.

Creating cattle colonies across various states should work as a solution to constant clashes between farmers and herdsmen, which is why the federal government has decided to try this out.

In his statement made public, Kogi State governor announced his support of this idea and said that it might have benefits for the people. He also added that the project would be paid by the federal government, and that it would be fair if states contributed their quotas.

Governor Bello’s press secretary went on to say that the governor was aware of people’s fears, especially on the topic of communal land. He said that the project did not mean that the government would take the ancestral land and give it to the herdsmen.

The statement also touched upon the intent of the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure everyone’s cooperation. The ministry plans to conduct a series of engagements with people, cattle breeders, farmers and other stakeholders in order to sensitise them on the implementation of this new policy.

According to the statement, citizens, religious leaders, opinion leaders, leaders of communities and traditional rulers will all be able to take part in the stakeholders’ engagements. That way, everyone would have an opportunity to share their opinion on the matter of the policy, thus allowing the Ministry and the government to figure out its pros and cons.

The engagements should also allow the participants to collectively discuss the ways to remedy the cons and make the pros even better. They would be a great help in integrating the policy into the life of the state without inconveniencing its citizens.

If the governor is to be believed, people should not be afraid that their communal land would be taken away and given to herdsmen. He said that the planned colonies of cattle are in everyone’s best interest. They should ensure the safety of state residents and improve agricultural production.

At the same time, on January 17, Taraba State government has warned the federal government that the state does not have land available for the proposed colonies of cattle. Punch reported that this was announced by the attorney general and commissioner for justice of the state, Yusufu Akirikwen.

Akirikwen questioned the wish of the federal government to acquire land all over the states for the cattle colonies. He also pointed out that there is a law for ranching in Taraba State, and he suggested that the government should support the state in the implementation of this law.
