A man working in his bean field Wednesday night got an unusual surprise.
Dodge County Sheriff Steve Hespen said the man, who lives in the extreme eastern edge of Dodge County near Nebraska Highway 36, discovered a live hand grenade in the field shortly after 10 p.m.
Hespen said the man found a post in his field and attempted to move it when he saw the grenade.
The Nebraska State Patrol’s bomb squad was called to the scene, but X-rays were inconclusive.
Hespen said the bomb squad attempted to detonate the device and then were able to tell that it indeed was a live grenade.
They then destroyed the device using C4 plastic explosives.
Hespen urged anyone with information about the incident to call his office at 402-727-2700.
