‘Bold Alligator 2012′ drills 20,000 US and allied troops on US East Coast for Persian Gulf action ~ link ~ Some 20,000 marines, seamen and air crews from half a dozen countries, a US nuclear aircraft carrier strike group and three US Marine gunship carriers are practicing an attack on a fictitious mechanized enemy division which has invaded its neighbor. It is the largest amphibian exercise seen in the West for a decade, staged to simulate a potential Iranian invasion of an allied Persian Gulf country and a marine landing on the Iranian coast. Based largely on US personnel and hardware, French, British, Italian, Dutch, Australian and New Zealand military elements are integrated in the drill.

US Rear Adm. Kevin Scott and Brig. Gen. Christopher Owens are coordinating the exercise over large stretches of coastal terrain in Virginia, North Carolina and Florida and Atlantic Ocean from the USS Wasp amphibian helicopter carrier. It is led by the USS Enterprise nuclear carrier with strike force alongside three amphibian helicopter carriers, the USS Wasp, the USS Boxer and the USS Kearsage. On their decks are 6,000 Marines, 25 fighter bombers and 65 strike and transport helicopters, mainly MV-22B Ospreys with their crews. Altogether 100 combat aircraft are involved.

Is Bold Alligator eying Tehran?~ link ~ The Bold Alligator drill includes 20,000 U.S. forces, plus hundreds of British, Dutch and French troops – as well as liaison officers from Italy, Spain, New Zealand and Australia.

The drill includes a beach landing and air assault supported by 25 warships, and is intended to “to revitalize, refine, and strengthen fundamental amphibious capabilities and reinforce the Navy and Marine Corps role as ‘fighters from the sea.’”

Former Mossad chief Meir Dagan kicked off a new movement calling for changes in the political system Wednesday by warning that the current system could result in faulty decision-making on key issues like Iran.

Dagan, who cannot run for the next Knesset due to a three-year cooling-off period for former top security officials, spoke about the vision of his new movement called “Yesh Sikui” (there is a chance) at its founding conference at Tel Aviv’s Diaspora Museum.

Former Mossad chief Meir Dagan on Wednesday presented a plan to change Israel’s governing system, while criticizing the excessive power of minority groups on politicians.

“The system must be changed now, we need a prime minister who will not be subject to political pressures when deciding on such issues as an attack on Iran or a peace agreement,” he said. “The State of Israel is at a critical point in time of great challenges both foreign and domestic. Minority groups are controlling the state and the majority is not being heard.”

British and Qatari special operations forces involved in fighting in Syria ~ link ~ British and Qatari special operations units are operating with rebel forces under cover in the Syrian city of Homs just 162 kilometers from Damascus, according to debkafile’s exclusive military and intelligence sources. The foreign troops are not engaged in direct combat with the Syrian forces bombarding different parts of Syria’s third largest city of 1.2 million. They are tactical advisers, manage rebel communications lines and relay their requests for arms, ammo, fighters and logistical aid to outside suppliers, mostly in Turkey.

Israel has discovered a new off-shore gas field, this time even closer to Lebanon, which warns it will go to war to defend its claim on gas finds.

The new field, dubbed “Tanin I,” is north of the giant Tamar field, both of them located off the Haifa cost. Lebanon has gone to the United Nations to claim that Israel is stealing its gas, arguing that the fields are within its maritime borders, and the new find is even closer to Lebanon.
