Richard Branson jokes that he is headed to the ‘centre of the Earth’ after James Cameron beat him to deepest point on planet

Sir Richard Branson has announced that he is headed to the ‘centre of Earth’, although don’t take his extravagant plans too seriously.

The tycoon declared his intentions after Titanic director James Cameron became the first solo diver to reach the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, which is the deepest point on the planet.

The owner of Virgin Group, who had hopes of his own to become the first person to make the deep-sea plunge, but maintained his sense of humour with his faux goal to journey deep inside the planet’s core.

Branson teased about his less-than-serious plans on his website: ‘I have long held a fascination with volcanoes having read Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” as a young boy.’

He went on to say: ‘Volcanoes are the next great unexplored terrain. What can I say, I lava challenge!’
