SyFy’s Ghost Hunters International Canceled!

The hit SyFy series Ghost Hunters International has officially been canceled!

For those of who who have been anxiously waiting for a new season to begin, you will be waiting a very long time. Unfortunately, the SyFy network decided to axe the show after just three seasons.

The news comes from lead investigator Barry Fitzgerald via Twitter after a fan tweets, “I’ve missed watching GHI, do u know if its coming back? I hope it does!” and Barry responds, “Nope. It’s over.”

Although execs over at SyFy have not released a statement at this time, I trust Barry knows what is really going on. In fact, Barry’s co-lead investigator Kris Williams hinted at the shows demise a few months ago (click here for a refresher) when she talked about making changes in her life. She also talked about the infamous bloodletting episode that resulted in a downward slide in ratings.

“As a skeptic, GHI spun off a skeptic team (TAPS)-I don’t feel that bloodletting belongs as a rational investigative tool on a team of skeptics. So, I don’t feel that I fit there,” says Kris.

As for whether Kris will go back to Ghost Hunters, the answer is no.

“Not going back to GH was my choice. There is no bad will, no drama. I love everyone over on GH and I love Syfy. I am very grateful for the time I spent on GH and everything I have experienced. I am personally just ready for something new-life is about moving forward, it’s about taking on new challenges.”

As a fan of the show, I am sad to see it come to an end. There are so many interesting places in the world where this team (or a new one) could have traveled to conduct more interesting investigations of the paranormal. Instead, EW reports SyFy is developing three new ghost related reality shows that may just make you want to switch the channel.

Apparently, the first new show is called Ghost Mine (premiering Jan. 16) and it’s basically a silly combination of mining and ghost hunting. In each new episode, “miners will face the day-to-day challenges of mining, aided by the paranormal investigators who unravel the mysteries surrounding the mine.”

The second new show is called Stranded (premiering Feb. 27) and it will use “self-recorded footage of a diverse group of every-day paranormal enthusiasts — from newlyweds and a brother-in-law to a trio of roommates. Each team of three will be stranded at one of the most haunted locations in America and record the entire experience with hand-held cameras.”

The third new show is the one that is most similar to GHI and it’s called Notorious Hauntings (premiering sometimes in Spring 2013). This series will follow a “group of researchers who investigate reports of extreme and dangerous supernatural activity across the globe.”

It seems ghost hunting is incredibly popular over at SyFy, but they might be taking their paranormal obsession a little over the edge. Honestly, Ghost Mine? Really?

What do you think?

I think the three new shows sound ridiculous. They should have kept to GHI. Ghost Mine just sounds stupid beyond all reason. Stranded sounds like a show on the Discovery channels that show up around Halloween every year (I think Travel, maybe). And then Notorious Hauntings just introducing new people to do the GHI job? That just sucks. Three seasions is not long enough to run out of great places for those people to go. Heck, they could do more just in Ireland, let alone everywhere else. They went lots of cool places I’ll probably never see outside of TV and investigated interesting stories about interesting places.

Ghost Mine ended up being a decent show. They used reasonable investigation techniques & found interesting links to historical events that surrounded the Oregon mine. Maybe try looking at a show before writing it off. As for the demise of GHI, I’m disappointed. I’m also a little disappointed in Kris. I’ve always felt that GH tends to carry skepticism too far. They blame air pressure or headlights or just gravity for things that just don’t seem to fit their explanations. It seems they’re more willing to toss potential evidence without really considering it with an open mind, which is what true skepticism is about. Perhaps they should try reading Descartes, one of the fathers of philosophical skepticism, before they claim to be skeptics. Believing in “not-something” is a worse bias than believing it & finding out you were wrong. The way GH operates is by believing the opposite & then finding evidence to throw out to show how “skeptical” they are. Either way, I’ve found few really decently good shows on the paranormal that use the scientific method the way it was meant to be used. Pretty much every show of this kind is for entertainment & has no real value as a tool of discovery & investigation. Outside of the entertainment value, these shows have little worth–GHI, in my opinion, had far more entertainment value than GH ever did or ever will. Kris Williams should get an education & find out what the scientific method & what skepticism really demand of us intellectually before she writes off a show that’s based in neither of those things at the outset. In that regard, Ghost Mine actually had more of a scientific approach & an open mindedness than any if the other shows in any network. They also had built-in naysayers in the form of the miners, who were superstitious to a fault but who didn’t believe that ghosts could hurt then or cause anything that would stand in the way if their payday. It made for an interesting mix & led the investigators to really be careful in the kind of evidence they presented & the conclusions they drew from it. I’m frankly waiting for the revolving door of GH to finally close once & for all. That show jumped the shark when Grant & Kris left–they were part of the team even though they had no idea how to actually conduct scientific investigations despite their use if scientific field equipment. It’s time for that show to be put to bed.
