During a trip to the United States, a powerful South Korean politician has suggested that his country needs nuclear weapons of its own – and not just to intimidate North Korea, but also to send a strong message to China.

Rep. Chung Moon-joon, in a speech Monday in Washington DC, said the Chinese have overlooked what Seoul sees as North Korea’s aggressive tactics in favor of disputes in Tibet and Taiwan.

US Official: North Korea could test fire missiles ‘at any time’ – with video ~ link ~ Even if both sides desire peace…which is doubtful…the level of ‘war drum’ beating has gotten so loud that it poses a real danger of getting out of control.  Remember that North Korea has 14,000 long range artillery guns in range of the South’s capital and largest city, plus many thousands of rockets and guided missiles.  These systems carry Advanced Conventional warheads (fuel air explosives), Chemical warheads, and likely Biological/Advanced Biological warheads, as well as Radiological warheads.  And of course, the North does have at least some nuclear warheads!  The warning time of a sudden North strike on the South is just about ZERO and that makes for one hell of a ‘hair trigger’ on events.   Stirling     

A powerful earthquake struck close to Iran’s only nuclear power station on Tuesday, killing 37 people and injuring 850 as it destroyed homes and devastated two small villages, Iranian media reported.

The 6.3 magnitude quake totally destroyed one village, a Red Crescent official told the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), but the nearby Bushehr nuclear plant was undamaged, according to Iranian officials and the Russian company that built it.

TEHRAN: A powerful earthquake struck near Iran’s Gulf port city of Bushehr on Tuesday, killing at least 30 people and injuring 800 but leaving Iran’s only nuclear power plant intact, officials said.

Shocks from the quake were felt across the Gulf in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, provoking panic and the brief evacuation of some office towers, residents and media said.

As has been documented, a huge factor in the shrinking away was partisan delusion. You put a different political party’s name on the wars and they become good wars.

But that also means that what you had was a peace movement that believed in the possibility of good wars. In fact, much of it believed that Iraq was a bad war and Afghanistan a good war. Many people even went out of their way to display their “reasonableness” by declaring Afghanistan a good war without actually examining the war on Afghanistan; this was imagined to be a strategic way to prevent or scale back or end the war on Iraq. 

Ninth H7N9 Death Raises Concerns ~ link ~ The death increases the total to 9.  Earlier today 4 additional confirmed cases were announced, increasing that total to 28.  WHO issued an update today which tallied 24 cases and 7 deaths.  Media reports had indicated one case (4M) had recovered.  That was was previously characterized as mild.  The recovery would be the first for a confirmed case and would lower the case fatality rate to 90%.

The number of confirmed avian cases has been low, raising the possibility that the avian positives reflect transmission from humans to birds, since all avian isolates have Q226L, and the E at position 627 was acquired through recombination or reassortment with other avian isolates, since E at position 627 is virtually universally detected in H7 or H9N2 isolates.  Moreover prior to this outbreak Q226L had not been reported in any H5N1 or H7 bird flu.

The high human case fatality rate continues to signal sustain human transmission via undected or unreported milder cases, WHO and CDC denials notwithstanding.

H7N9 E627K Raises Pandemic Concerns ~ link ~ This difference is significant, since E627K produces temperature dependent differences in polymerase activity.  Avian sequences typically have an E at position 627 which produces optimal activity at 40 C, the body temperature of a bird, while E627K produces optimal activity at 33 C

Prior to the H7N9 outbreak there have been only one reported death due to bird flu, which was a veterinarian infected with H7N7 during the 2003 outbreak in the Netherlands, which had E627K.  Thus, the presence of E627K in the first three cases, which were severe or fatal, and the expectation of E627K in the most recent human sequence, which was also from a fatal case, raises serious pandemic concerns.
