Girls are more likely to sleep around at university if they smoke cannabis, according to a new study.
American researchers set out to discover if some students are more likely than others to ‘hook up’.
They discovered that smoking cannabis was one of the main factors determining whether first-year, female university students took part in casual, ‘no-strings’ sexual relationships.
Lead author Robyn Fielder, from The Miriam Hospital’s Centres for Behavioural and Preventive Medicine in Rhode Island, surveyed 483 incoming first-year female university students about their risk behaviours, personality traits and social environment.
Specific questions covered the students’ sexual behaviour and their attitudes towards sex.
They also discussed the students’ self-esteem, religious beliefs, parents’ relationship status, alcohol and cannabis use, smoking, impulsivity and sensation-seeking behaviour.
Researchers re-interviewed the women monthly for eight months.
Fielder said: ‘Our findings suggest hooking up during the first year of college is influenced by marijuana use.’
The study is believed to be the first to explore cannabis use as a reason why students took part in casual sexual relationships.

If you stupid enough to use drugs you’re stupid enough to have sex when you’re not married.
I knew that from high school.
This is a ridiculous study. One of the first thing you learn when conducting these types of studies is that a correlation between two things, in this case smoking marijuana and having sex, does not imply one is caused by the other. The girls in this study might simply be pleasure seekers that have found both smoking and having sex to be enjoyable. To say that smoking weed is influencing or causing these girls to have more frequent sex is simply a poor scientific connection.
A more obvious example that demonstrates this: there is a correlation between people eating ice cream on a certain day as well as the crime rate being higher on the same day. To see this data and claim that people eating ice cream is causing the crime rate to go up would be ridiculous. Instead the cause could be something unaccounted for, such as it being extremely hot that day, which leads to people eating ice cream to cool off and other people getting agitated from the heat, who then go out and commit crimes.
This was an example covered in an intro to psychology class.
ace656,
You’re very correct about what you write.
The important thing, is who funded this study, and why.
Whoever it is/was, is obviously “anti-marijuana”
These females who smoke Mary Jane, who do they engage in sexual activity with?
Others who have smoked too?
Whether male or female, wouldn’t it have to go both ways?
If it was researched more carefully, it would be found that girls who chew gum, would be more likely to have casual sex, then those who don’t.
If it were found that smoking Mary Jane caused more people to engage in sexual activity (maybe it does), then what better than a natural aphrodisiac.
The pharmaceutical companies would have capitalized on it long ago.
Just saying.
The never ending focus on American women should give all intelligent people pause. It never ends, ad nauseam.
Peace Love and Happiness
all else is illusion
I think it is girls who drink alcohol. Or perhaps girls who smoke marijuana choose to sleep with someone and drunk girls just get taken advantage of, because they are drunk and loose. Marijuana does not make you promiscuous, but alcohol does.
well said…..
People with lower inhibitions are more likely to experiment with drugs, sex, and just about everything else.
Whatever, Neil! I’d just like to know where I can meet some of these babes.
Duh. Why do you think we spend so much time trying to get them high?
Thank God for Marijuana
