‘World’s most private search engine’ won’t betray you to Obama

WND

Chelsea Schilling

The federal government may be secretly accessing Americans’ online videos, emails, photos and search histories – with the help of Apple, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook, YouTube, PalTalk, AOL and Skype – but “the world’s most private search engine” is staunchly defending its users’ privacy and civil liberties.

StartPage.com and its sister search engine, Ixquick.com, were launched in 2006 to provide a private way for Americans to conduct Internet searches. StartPage provides a private portal to Google results, and Ixquick allows users to retrieve private results from other search engines.

WND reported in 2010 when Katherine Albrecht, a Harvard-trained privacy who helped develop StartPage, warned, “It would blow people’s minds if they knew how much information the big search engines have on the American public. In fact, their dossiers are so detailed they would probably be the envy of the KGB.”

It happens every day, Albrecht explained. When an unfamiliar topic crosses people’s minds, they often go straight to Google, Yahoo or Bing and enter key terms into those search engines. Every day, more than a billion searches for information are performed on Google alone.

“If you get a rash between your toes, you go into Google,” she said. “If you have a miscarriage, you go into Google. If you are having marital difficulties, you look for a counselor on Google. If you lose your job, you look for unemployment benefit information on Google.”

Albrecht said Americans unwittingly share their most private thoughts with search engines, serving up snippets of deeply personal information about their lives, habits, troubles, health concerns, preferences and political leanings.

Yes, but you get the same BS results as goobull, ie adverts, ebay,…

I use Gibiru and it seems almost as good as Google, because with Google you never know if search results are being sensored

      • ThenAgain

I know that absolutely goog is censoring results, big time. Thanks for the mention, will check into that one.

hey!! it’s not run by Zionists!! seriously, I’ve been using it for about 6 months, basically, IT GOOGLES FOR YOU. that’s the simplest way i can explain it. it’s my homepage. if i have a question that is NOT pop culture, i use it. if it’s a news headline or celebrity thing, i use bing or whatever. if i want to download NDAA or executive orders or ANYTHING like that, historical, what have you, i use startpage.com, when i wanted to know where Chechnya was i searched it on startpage. it MAY be BS but Google IS. just go to startpage and i guess to Google it’ll look like they are looking up BILL OF RIGHTS and not some guy in Sheridan Wyoming, understand? i like it. it makes me FEEL secure and that’s all we can ax for.

It’s important to separate what is being claimed. startpage / ixquick may not willingly ‘share your searches with obama’, however the govt can see searches with virtually any engine, including theirs. Their ‘sharing’ with the govt and the govt’s ability are two different things.
Contrarily, while it may not be private from the govt, startpage claims it doesn’t gather your data itself to sell off, so it may be an improvement. Though who is funding the engine, since it’s free.
For some privacy improvement use TOR. It’s not about fear or hiding somthing, just making it harder for govt snoops who are doing this illegally, and it is. We can also stop funding the big tech companies, stop buying things you don’t need, many things are being built for spying including appliances with rfid installed in them. There is silent circle for cell phones, don’t know what the status is on it, seemed it could be a good product. The ‘unsene’ product advertised here looks positive though the privacy it offers appears to depend somewhat on how many people sign up, so look into it. Do less online, use different products, if you need a new computer have one built with Linux and ubunto, etc. get off fcbk. Use tor for startpage. Stop buying stuff from big corporations.

I’ve been using Startpage for quite some time. I like it and recommend it to everyone. However, once you click a link, if anyone is monitoring the traffic to and from your IP address, they will know what you’re doing, so this is not hiding too much from them.

TOR, as already mentioned, is a good way to obfuscate your data traffic through an anonymous IP address that is not your own. I’ve used it a few times. I’m also playing around with an open source Linux project called Whonix that is based on TOR. It uses 2 virtual machines that you can run under Windows in Oracle’s VirtualBox software – one is a gateway and one is a workstation.

Still, there are drawbacks with that approach as in anything. Don’t expect to check your bank account with a TOR or Whonix arrangement, however. They will see your IP as foreign and block you thinking you are a hacker. lol
