Director of anti-gun group, Mark Glaze, says best way to fight a man charging with an axe handle is to use your words. (VIDEO)

Sunday, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns [MAIG], Mark Glaze, offered that the best way to deal with a man armed with an axe handle who was set on inflicting great bodily injury or death, was to simply talk to him.

While on the set of MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews, Glaze argued that unless an assailant is armed with a firearm, the victim absolutely has no right to preserve their life by using one of their own.

“Very often somebody will come at you. They might want to have a fistfight. They might come at you with an axe handle,” Glaze started.

“Would you consider the guy with the axe handle armed or not?” Matthews asked.

“Not with a gun,” said Glaze.

“I would consider him armed,” Matthews chuckled.

“I have a word for him. I grew up in Colorado where my dad was a gun dealer, and a guy who shoots somebody who has anything other than a gun when they could have done something else like talk or fight with their fists…” Glaze began to explain.

Matthews interrupted, “How do you talk to a guy with an axe handle?”

“Well, you fight him. You run away. You deescalate the situation,” Glaze said plainly.

De-escalation through tactical communication can be a very effective tool. Many potentially violent situations can be avoided with several well-chosen words. That being said, Glaze’s example is probably not one of them.

Also in the interview was Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post, who regarded certain aspects of the “Stand Your Ground” law as “insane.” He asked how one would define “reasonably believing they are in danger of bodily harm or death.”

Though the opinions between the men varied greatly, the interview ended amiably with Matthews thanking Glaze for joining him on the show.
