It is well known within the Church that many Bishops in the US were defying orders from successive Pope’s for many years. These Popes were trying to clean up US and other western churches who were rebelling. These are the same areas that are now scandalised. It is hypocrisy for Miss O’Conner to now blame the Vatican for ‘Rebel’ Bishops (who she has been encouraging)
Despite the Catholic Church getting the most attention, it has near the lowest rates of abuse among any religious organisation, and many times less than in secular society. The highest abuse rates by far are within government run organisations.

I grew up in a catholic orphanage and was at many many many times assaulted by nons. I don’t trust them at all.
I guess folks are grasping any straw to justify their own wicked behavior. Even if all they profess were actually true, that still doesn’t excuse them for behaving as they do. I, for one, will continue to live my life as God would wish to the best of my ability. Others may do as they wish and justify it by reviling others.

The corruption within the Church on part of its members does not affect the validity of the Church Itself. People always point out how evil many individuals in the Church are these days. But the fact that so many people ignore is that if evil exists within the Church, it is only because many within the Church DO NOT PRACTICE the teachings of the Church that they claim to belong to.
The Church is spotless and infallible. Human beings do harm to the Church when they do not OBEY the Church. Obedience to the Church will make you a Saint. DIS-obedience to the Church will make you corrupt.
