Retired United States Army vet speaks out about Miriam Carey murder by DC Polece and Congress standing ovation

I have intentionally refrained from posting anything on the shooting of the unarmed 34 year old mother, Miriam Carey, from Connecticut who was shot to death by Capitol police on Thursday, October 3rd. Based upon my own background in law enforcement and military career I have always been quick to defend police officers from charges of abuse of authority; however, in this particular case I must call for a wholesale investigation by an outside agency (e.g. Texas Rangers) of everyone involved in her death. In the first place, no one has suggested that Ms. Carey displayed a firearm at any time to anyone or threatened anyone involved in the incident. In the clip of the stop, with her car jammed against the poles preventing her from moving forward, her rented car was surrounded by police vehicles. If the police cruiser that stopped behind her car had pulled up against her bumper when it stopped (which is a common police tactic to prevent escape) she could not have later fled the scene–they provided her a means to escape by leaving the cruiser to the rear of her car with space for her to back up. Second, there are clearly no less than five officers with weapons drawn and threatening this mother with her one year old child in the car. Did they not think that their actions might escalate the situation and force the mother to seek to flee away from the officers? Third, when they did allow this unarmed woman (yes, I know that the car could be considered a weapon) to flee the scene with her child in the car, many of the officers began to fire their service weapons at the fleeing auto. Every one of those officers (unless they were all rookies with less than a week of service under their belts) had to know that their rounds represented at least as much of a threat to citizens in nearby streets, sidewalks, buildings, and parks–and the child in the car–as they did the alleged perpetrator fleeing the scene. Beyond the danger of their rounds striking unintended victims, they had to know that the speeding automobile represented a major danger to people and property in front of it as it sped away if they had disabled the driver. In the end, all of the windows of the car were shot out and who knows how many rounds glanced off of the auto that could have killed any number of other people. Thankfully, the baby was not killed or wounded–no thanks to the police who were reckless in their use of their weapons (police agency safety classes? no?) (have they never attended NRA weapons safety classes? no?). Not only that, have they accounted for all of the rounds fired by the police that may not have struck the automobile? Where did those rounds go?! What we have today is a dead young mother who came to the White House, unarmed, with her child. Calling her a mental case, I think, may simply be a means to discredit her before the public. Why did she think she needed to see the president? What is her connection to the president? Did she have any connection–any relationship–with a member of the White House administration, staff, or Secret Service? There are way too many questions as to why the police gang shot this woman. Most police departments don’t have to shoot fleeing subjects that do not have a firearm. Why did this woman have to die? We all need some answers and the police officers involved must be investigated by outside agencies to determine why she had to die. I was willing, at first, to agree with people who give the police the benefit of the doubt. Now I only have doubt.
