This Is What Happens When Liberals Win

I am finding it quite humorous that Americans’ beef with the Republican Party is that they are “unwilling to compromise,” as a recent Gallup poll suggested. I find it especially comical considering that the Democratic Party never compromises over anything.

Liberal Democrats ran for office in 2012 on the platform of reforming Obamacare, not keeping it in its current state. Yet now that they are in office, they will not even compromise on the most basic of Obamacare reforms. Republicans in the House tried to rid of the medical devices tax, a ridiculous and unnecessary tax that punishes medical innovation and will send high-paying American jobs overseas. Elected Democrats wouldn’t get rid of that. Republicans tried to delay the individual mandate, which would limit American freedom and cause millions of young Americans to suffer sleepless nights over unpaid bills. This was denied by Democrats. Republicans tried passing piecemeal legislation to reopen government so that the American people would not be held hostage by a federal government that couldn’t reach an agreement over Obamacare. Democrats denied that. Republicans tried to restore funding for the NIH, a program dedicated to saving the lives of children dying of cancer. Democrats denied that. Republicans tried to remove Obamacare exemptions for Congress, so that they, too, would have to suffer from Obamacare. Democrats denied that, too. All they can say is no. Compromised bill after compromised bill is being sent to the Senate by the House Republicans, and every time they are shut down (no pun intended). They are told “my way or the highway” by the Democrats in Washington. So now tell me– which reforms are the Democrats going to support, again? But regardless, none of this would even be happening if the Republican Party hadn’t committed suicide, and hadn’t handed the Senate over to the Democrats on a silver platter.

Before I go any further, I would like to smash this ridiculous notion that Barack Obama ran on the platform of Obamacare in 2012, and that the majority of Americans elected him on that platform. This is preposterous and ignorant. I am hearing it repeated like a pull-toy on the news by liberals, and no Republicans are adequately rebutting it. Has anyone heard of Romney-Care? It seems as if every Republican strategist on television forgot that Mitt Romney endorsed the same socialist healthcare plan as Obama, just under a different name. So if both candidates are in relative agreement over healthcare, then who in their right mind would be voting for that candidate solely based on a policy that is identical, either way? It would be like me having said that I was going to be a single-issue voter for Tom Smith (Republican Senate candidate in 2012, from Pennsylvania) because he was pro-life, even though his opponent, Bob Casey, was pro-life, too. It makes no sense.

But what I can say for certain is that if Barack Obama ran on the platform of Obamacare against an actual conservative who opposed government healthcare, the results would have been much different. A commanding majority of Americans have opposed Obamacare since it was passed. In fact, every single poll since 2010 (out of several hundred!) has shown that a majority of Americans disapprove of Obamacare. And anyway, presidential exit polls showed that a mere 18% of Americans viewed health care as the most important issue facing the country. About the same amount of those surveyed believed that the deficit was the biggest issue facing America, and no one cares about the deficit (but it is important). People do not like Obamacare — Democrats in Washington do. The only way that they stay in office is by claiming they are willing to reform Obamacare, or they just live in a reliably Democratic state. But when put to the test, they don’t even support “reforms” either, whatever that means.

Now back to what I really want to focus on, which is the fact that none of this should have ever happened. Republicans should have been able to have won back the Senate, but instead, we still trail 54-46, and after the New Jersey election last Wednesday, 55-45. And our selection of candidates is not helping. Let me preface what I am about to say by clarifying that I am a die-hard conservative and there is not a single liberal bone in my body. However, I would like to win elections. And honestly, Republicans have really turned away potential voters with many of their Senatorial candidates.

I like Christine O’Donnell. But a Tea Partier is not going to win an election in Delaware. Delaware is one of the most liberal states in the nation. Running a Tea Partier in Delaware is just stupid. While I would prefer a Tea Partier over a moderate Republican in DC, a moderate Republican is way better than a Democrat (unless their name is Lindsey Graham). We have to put forward people that actually have a chance of winning in these states. For the first (and last) time in my entire life, I am going to say that we need to copy what the Democrats are doing in many states. Democrats in ultra-Republican states do not run bleeding-heart liberals, because they know that they won’t be able to win. They run social conservatives. That is how Democrats manage to get Senate seats representing Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Arkansas, Louisiana, and several other dark-red states. The only Republican in any left-leaning state in the entire country is Susan Collins of Maine — a centrist.

We cannot run people like Steve Lonegan in New Jersey. If he had won, I would have been thoroughly surprised. Even Cory Booker won this New Jersey Senate race because the majority of New Jersey-ites don’t like the Tea Party. The only time we will ever see a Republican winning in New Jersey is when we run people like Chris Christie in that state — moderate Republicans. I have my problems with Chris Christie, but for New Jersey, he is the only kind of Republican that will win. We have to stop throwing these super-conservative candidates into the arena in states that are ideologically left of center. I am not saying that I want Republicans to settle on their principles (I don’t, at all). I am simply sick and tired of losing.

And lastly, we need to invent some sort of cattle-prodding technique to sort out these idiots that keep tarnishing the Republican image. In 2012, Missouri lost a Senate race that they should have absolutely won. The reason? Todd Akin. His comments about “legitimate rape” buried his campaign, disgraced the pro-life movement, and made jaws drop across the country. He should have left the race, immediately. But Republicans did not put enough pressure on Akin, and he went on to run — and lose — by 15% in Republican Missouri. Richard Mourdock’s outburst about rape being something “God intended to happen” during his 2012 Senatorial campaign in Indiana did not help us, either. Republicans should have pressured him to step down from his campaign, too. But we didn’t. And he went on to run — and lose — by 6% in Republican Indiana. Republican John Raese compared smoking bans to Hitler’s Jewish star policy, and when questioned about if he wanted to apologize, he said, “I am not going to be intimidated by a bunch of bull****.” Republicans should have put pressure on him to step down and let someone else take his place. But we didn’t. And he went on to run — and lose — by 24% in Republican West Virginia.

Thanks to our own stupidity, the Republican Party is not going to win this fight over Obamacare. If Republicans controlled the Senate right now, President Obama would have been under a lot more pressure, and indisputably would have compromised. But we don’t own the Senate. And it isn’t very close. We have to stop allowing idiots to run our party and stop running people who will never win elections in their states. We have to be smart and tactical in our political approach. Once we can brush off our party boneheads, we will then take the Senate, and we won’t have to shut down the government over Obamacare anymore.
