Mexican security forces have arrested this weekend second-in-command of Jalisco New Generation drug cartel, Knights Templar’s rival gang. Photos of cash, guns, caged wild animals and more at the drug lord’s home when arrested, if verified, give remarkable insight into the underworld life of a son of Mexico’s most wanted man.

Ruben Oseguera Gonzalez, “El Menchito,” in his early twenties, allegedly second-in-command of Jalisco New Generation, a criminal organization led by his father, was arrested in a high-profile operation involving dozens of soldiers and police.

The New Generation cartel is allegedly involved in large-scale drug trafficking along Mexico’s Pacific Coast, working with the Sinaloa cartel, led by the most wanted man in Mexico, Joaquin ‘Shorty’ Guzman.

‘Cash and guns’

Oseguera Gonzalez, believed to control the cartel’s finances, was arrested in Zapopan, a city in the Greater Guadalajara area of Jalisco state.

Roads were blocked. Soldiers and policemen forced their way in, backed up with a helicopter. Gang members set buses alight in Zapopan and shot at passing vehicles.

Mexican officials say they seized “a large amount of cash,” weapons and ammunition in the raid.

“There are indications that Ruben Oseguera Gonzalez was in charge of buying and selling drugs produced in South America,” said Mexico’s National Public Security System Secretary Monte Alejandro Rubido.

He was also in charge of “ordering the execution of those who refused to collaborate with the organisation and to make sure rival organisations were kept out of Colima and Jalisco states,” said Mr Rubido. 

Michoacan vigilantes

The federal arrest comes only after a week of the Mexican government agreeing to join forces with vigilantes, who had taken matters into their own hands, saying they were forced to do so since the government continued to allow drug violence.

Now the vigilantes, police and military have joined forces - using insider information that vigilantes supply, according to news reports last week.

Last year, the New Generation gang allegedly led by El Menchito’s father, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, escaped unscathed from a similar operation in Jalisco state, according to the Milenio newspaper.

The New Generation gang is in a turf war with Knights Templar cartel, that in recent years took control of criminal activities in neighbouring Michoacan state.

Vigilante groups in Michoacan launched an offensive against the Knights Templar earlier this month aimed at ridding the state of the criminal gang.
