Elon Musk's Latest Revolutionary Move

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Tesla’s unstoppable Elon Musk is taking on the fossil fuel industry in a bigger and better way yet, after giving away his electric vehicle patents.

The energy world is not keeping up with Elon Musk, so he’s trying to take matters into his own hands. Musk, chairman of the solar installer SolarCity, announced Tuesday that his company is acquiring a solar panel maker and building factories “an order of magnitude” bigger than plants presently churning out panels, according to the Associated Press.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but SolarCity shares were up almost 14% in midday trading Tuesday.

Say goodbye to dirty coal and fracking, if Musk’s plans reach fruition.

SolarCity won’t try turning out more of the garden-variety panels now clogging the market. Instead, it plans to make panels more efficient at a lower cost in huge factories to reduce the overall cost of solar electricity. The new relatively complex panels generate more power per square foot than typical panels.

SolarCity is negotiating with the state of New York to build what would be among the largest factories in the world over the next two years.

Musk plans to manufacture enough panels each year to produce 1 gigawatt of peak power — roughly enough panels to outfit 200,000 homes with a typical-sized rooftop system.

That would be “just a start,” Musk said.

Where the heck are you getting that, Duane? The fossil fuel industry maybe?

I have a 7.5KW solar plant on my roof. It produces about ⅔ of my electric power; the rest I buy from the local utility.

Solar power isn’t something that presently makes economic sense for a homeowner. Bought and installed in the conventional way, the payback is about ten years. And the investment isn’t cheap. I invested in solar power for my home because my power utility gets it’s juice from a huge nuclear plant and I don’t want to contribute one more gram of radioactive waste into the environment than I have to.

Mr. Musk has created an innovative leasing plan that lets homeowners deploy solar power with much less upfront investment. It’s an interesting alternative. I chose not to go with SolarCity because it comes with too many strings attached and I don’t like strings – so I bought my system outright from a conventional installer. But what Musk is doing is innovative and deserves consideration by folks who want to go solar but can’t afford the upfront cost.
