8 Weird Animals You Didn’t Know Exist

1. Goblin Shark
A deep sea shark that has been found in all three major oceans, which indicates that it lives around the world. The goblin shark is considered a living fossil due to the fact that it is the only existing representative of the family Mitsukurinidae, which has a lineage of over 125 million years.

2. Atretochoana-Eiselti
Atretochoana is a type of amphibian that resembles an earthworm or a snake. Until recently, Atretochoana was thought to be extinct until scientists found a specimen in 2011 in Brazil. It is such a rare species of animal that scientists do not even know if it is endangered or not.

3. Hummingbird Hawk-Moth
Distributed throughout much of the warmer climates of the northern Old World, the hummingbird Hawk-Moth is a moth that looks remarkably like a hummingbird. Scientists believe that it is an example of convergent evolution.

4. Poodle Moth
Found in Venezuela in 2009, this little moth caused was at first thought to be a hoax. However, scientists have verified its authenticity and the Venezuelan poodle moth is now on its way to becoming its own species.

5. Giant Isopod
The name “Giant Isopod” is a general description that includes around 20 species of large isopods. Isopods are the distant relatives to shrimp, crabs, and other crustaceans. Giant Isopod’s are an example of deep-sea gigantism, and have been found in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans

6. Blue Parrotfish
Ever relax on a beach and enjoy the white expanse of sand? You should thank the blue parrotfish for that. When the blue parrotfish eats the algae that live on rocks and coral, they also grind parts of the rock up into little pieces of sand and then spit them back out. Scientists believe that this action has attributed to the formation of many of the beaches and small islands in the Caribbean. The blue parrotfish is found throughout much of the Western Atlantic and is the only uniformly blue fish that scientists know of.

7. Purple Frog
Also called the pignose frog, this ugly amphibian is found in the Western Ghats in India. Although the local population of humans had known about the frog for decades, the first scientific paper published on its genus and species was released in 2003. The reason it took the frog so long to get noticed is probably due to the fact that it lives underground for most of the year and only comes out for about two weeks out of every year to mate.

8. Sea Pig
The sea pig is not a type of pig at all. It is a type of sea cucumber. Sea pigs live on the ocean floor all over the world and are extremely populous. They feed on the decaying animal and plant material that can be found in the mud at the bottom of the sea.
