BREXIT: Is the vote even worth holding?

By Ian Greenhalgh on June 23, 2016

Is there any chance of an honest result?

As someone who is bitterly opposed to the EU, it is perhaps a surprising thing for me to ask if today’s referendum vote in Britain is even worth holding; surely I would be all for it, a chance to get out of the EU, how wonderful!

But that is to presuppose I have confidence that it will be a free and fair vote; I have no such confidence, rather I feel that the vote is a farce, that it will have no bearing on the government’s position or Britain’s membership of the EU for the simple reason that the damn thing will be as crooked as a three pound note!

The last British general election was tainted by voting fraud centred around abuse of the postal voting system and the Scottish referendum was almost certainly rigged – the exit polls, a notoriously accurate measure, were spectacularly wrong, not a common occurrence, in fact, it has never happened before, so you tell me, did the pollsters have an off day or what that vote crooked?

Those who think it was free and fair, please get in touch, I have some snake oil and magic beans that I can let you have for a very good price.

Personally, I think British politics today is so stage-managed, with all the key points planned out years in advance that the only way for the British people to be able to exercise control over it’s government (yes, it’s the people who should control the government, not the other way round) is to have a revolution and clear out all of the elite, the inbred Judeo-German ‘Royal family’, the City of London and all it’s banking houses and all the other tentacles of power that have reigned here for centuries. But don’t let me get too far into that particular rant, I could go on for days…

How many people in Britain know that we don’t have a written constitution? We cling on to English Common Law and the Magna Carta dearly, for they are all we have been able to squeeze out of the elite in terms of rights in how many centuries? Isn’t it about time we updated things just a bit?

But back to today and the BREXIT farce and the stage management of British politics. To me, it is all so bleeding obvious that it is all pre-planned years in advance, that there is no real politics going on anymore as there is no true opposition to the government, what opposition dos exist is sidelined and ridiculed by the media. That is why we have the wonderfully neat and cosy situation where the leaders of the two campaigns, Cameron the pig abuser and his old school chum Boris are doing a jolly good job of pretending to be politicians and care about the events of the day. Truth is, the pair of them are nothing more than actors who care about the size of their bank balance by the time they retire from ‘politics’ and are fully occupied by remembering their scripted lines and not saying anything they haven’t been told to.

As for pre-planning, I think they told Boris to do a good job and he could be the next PM, I suspect they chose him to be Cameron’s successor years ago, hence his status as a media darling and frequent presence on television programs of all kinds. I can just picture the scene, some smoke-stained oak-paneled back room in an ancient men’s club somewhere in a respectable part of London’s West End where fat, flatulent and fatuous big-wigs are stuffed into button-backed leather chairs, their porcine fingers wrapped around brandy glasses while their bloated guts digest lunch. ‘Boris dear cheap, how would you like to be the next PM?’ ‘Oh, that sounds like it might be a jolly good laugh..’ ‘There is something we’d like you to do for us though Boris, you see, there’s this troublesome matter of the EU referendum, perhaps you could help us with that…’

Maybe I’ve watched Yes, Minister too many times?

Anyways, let’s hope that I am utterly, totally and completely wrong and the result of the BREXIT vote is to leave the accursed EU. I’d love to be wrong about Boris being the next PM too….

A written constitution can be re-written and re-interpreted, just like yours. Better fundamental rights and rule not of law but of principle.
