Obama endorses Hillary Clinton for president (VIDEO)

President Obama on Thursday threw his weight behind presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, going as far as appearing in a promotional video for her.

“I know how hard this job can be,” Obama said. “That’s why I know Hillary will be so good at it. In fact, I don’t think there’s ever been someone so qualified to hold this office.”

Obama also called on the party to unify, saying he planned to be active on the campaign trail.

The news came just hours after the president and Clinton’s opponent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, met to discuss the race, the National Memo reported. During that meeting, Sanders said he would continue campaigning, but signaled that he would eventually concede to Clinton.

“I look forward to meeting with [Clinton] in the near future to see how we can work together to defeat Donald Trump and to create a government which represents all of us and not just the 1 percent,” Sanders told reporters outside of the Oval Office.

During a rally in Santa Monica, California, Tuesday Sanders said he would “work as hard as I can to make sure that Donald Trump does not become president of the Untied States.”

Sanders is considered a semi-gun-friendly candidate, having received a passing grade from the National Rifle Association in the past for his voting record on gun issues. However, the gun group was quick to put some distance between itself and the Democratic socialist. Prior to the NRA’s endorsement of Trump last month, Guns.com asked the group whether it opposed Sanders’ candidacy, to which a spokesperson replied, “Anyone but Hillary.”

Clinton is despised by the gun lobby, who sees her as a threat to the Second Amendment and to the rights of gun owners and firearms manufacturers.   

During the NRA’s convention last month in Kentucky, Trump took the gun lobby’s position, saying Clinton would “abolish the Second Amendment.”

Obama has also received his fair share of criticism from the gun lobby, which Clinton has recently began to receive. As early as last year, the NRA set its sights on Clinton, saying she was bad for gun rights. But should she win the presidency, there may be no doubt that she’ll be good for business, much like Obama has been during his tenure.

Because of fear-based spending these past eight years, the firearms industry has seen a significant increase in gun sales during Obama’s presidency, earning him the moniker of “best gun salesman.”

For the gun industry and its lobby, a Clinton win will be a natural progression.       

This isn’t the first time a president has named his successor, the Los Angeles Times noted. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan endorsed his vice president, George Bush Sr.
