A 22-year-old Michigan elector, scheduled to cast his official vote December 19, claims that he has been the target of a slew of death threats for insisting on casting his electoral vote for Republican candidate Donald Trump.
“The people of Michigan spoke, and it’s our job to deliver that message” Michael Banerian, youth vice chair of the Michigan Republican Party, told The Detroit News. Banerian sees himself as next-generation millennial dedicated to upholding the integrity of the electoral system.
According to the elector, Trump opponents have emailed him, calling him a hateful bigot and threatening to shove a gun in his mouth and blow his brains out. “Even the non-threatening-my-life emails are very aggressive,” Banerian said.
Banerian suggested in a recent op-ed that if an elector casts a vote for anyone besides Trump, the vote should be nullified and the elector should be replaced. Further, electors are obliged to represent their own states, rendering threats from outside of Michigan’s borders inappropriate, at best.
