NRA ceo and executive vice president Wayne LaPierre about to discuss the National School Shield program.

Training for the National Rifle Association’s school safety program has been confirmed for multiple locations next month, the organization announced this week.

The NRA said instruction will be comprised of various security assessor training classes that’s ideal for law enforcement, school facility personnel and others directly responsible for school security. Dates and locations include:

  • Libby, Montana: May 1-5 on behalf of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office
  • Twin Falls, Idaho: May 8-12 on behalf of the Buhl Police Department
  • Roseburg, Oregon: May 15-19 on behalf of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office
  • Walla Walla, Washington: May 22-26 on behalf of the Walla Walla Sheriff’s Office

The training is part of the NRA’s School Shield program that launched in the wake of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, which resulted in the murder of 20 first-graders and six educators.

When details about the program were released in 2013, the key component was to post armed security guards at schoolhouses across the country, but the program also discussed implementing plans for security management and emergency response protocols.
