Congressmen injured in shooting at GOP baseball practice for charity

There was a shooting at this morning’s Republican Congressional baseball practice just outside of Washington, D.C., according to Alexandria police. Rep. Mo Brooks, who was at the scene, told CNN that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, a GOP staffer and three U.S. Capitol Police officers were shot. Brooks said the shooter was not saying anything.

The shooter had a rifle and scope. Alexandria police say that the suspect is in custody and is not a threat. A Public Information Officer will be sharing more information.

Rep. Ron DeSantis told Fox & Friends that he had reported to authorities “an encounter with someone who wanted to know whether they were Republicans or Democrats,” but he didn’t know if it was the shooter.

Rand Paul on Alexandria shooting: “We were sitting ducks”

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot this morning, along with several others, at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia.

On MSNBC this morning, Sen. Rand Paul described the scene as a “killing field” that left the members of Congress “sitting ducks.” Paul told Fox News he heard at least 50-60 shots, and that he believed the shooter to be using an AR-15.

A lone gunman opened fire on Republican members of the congressional baseball team at a practice field in a Washington suburb Wednesday, using a rifle to shower the field with bullets that struck five people, including Steve Scalise, the majority whip of the House of Representatives.

Two members of Mr. Scalise’s protective police detail were wounded as they exchanged gunfire with the gunman in what lawmakers described as a chaotic, terror-filled ten minutes that turned the baseball practice into an early-morning nightmare. The police said two of the five people shot were critically wounded.

Standing at second base, Mr. Scalise was struck, in the hip, according to witnesses, and collapsed as the shots rang out, one after another, from behind a chain-link fence near the third-base dugout. Witnesses said Mr. Scalise, of Louisiana, “army crawled” his way toward taller grass as the shooting continued.

Two law enforcement officials identified the gunman as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Ill., a suburb of St. Louis. The Washington Post first identified Mr. Hodgkinson as the suspect in the shooting.
