Kim Jong Un’s regime in North Korea stunned the world Monday by successful testing an intercontinental ballistic missile that now gives it the ability to potentially strike Alaska with a nuclear warhead.

In response to this latest threat, the United States and South Korea held “precision-strike drills” Thursday designed to send a powerful message to North Korea, the Yonhap News Agency reported.

And the weaponry involved was massive.

Not everybody asserts as confidently as the Pentagon that the U.S. military can defend the United States from the growing threat posed by North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile capability.

Pyongyang’s first test on Tuesday of an ICBM with the potential to strike the state of Alaska has raised the question: How capable is the U.S. military of knocking down an incoming missile or barrage of missiles?

Briefing reporters on Wednesday, Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said: “We do have confidence in our ability to defend against the limited threat, the nascent threat that is there.”

“The 3,200-ton Yang Manchun destroyer, the 2,500-ton Chungbuk frigate, 13 other warships, the P-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft and Lynx multi-role planes, as well as FA-5, F-4E and KF-16 tactical fighter jets” were all featured during the exercise, Yonhap reported.

The drill featured the launch of many precision missiles against a simulated attack by North Korea. This drill sent a strong message to North Korea that we are still technologically superior, and can strike deep into their country if necessary.

“Our military is fully ready for an immediate response even in the event of combat today,” explained South Korean Rear Adm. Kwon Jeong-seop.

The Washington Post noted that while China and Russia called for more dialogue with North Korea in response to the ICBM test, the United States and South Korea opted for this powerful display of military might right on North Korea’s doorstep.

Diplomacy hasn’t been getting us anywhere with North Korea. The only language the leaders of the Kim regime understand is force, and this exercise reminded them that while they managed to fire one missile (after decades of failure), we have thousands of missiles that can destroy their country an instant.

USA Today reported that Trump has indicated he is considering a “severe” response to North Korea’s latest provocation — though it is unclear what exactly a “severe” response would look like.

Knowing that our military and South Korea’s military are ready and able to confront the North Koreans will give Trump more options while considering what to do about the rogue nation.   READ MORE
