July 14, 2017: Dramatic video of home being devoured by planet Earth like a snack. The sinkhole began as a much smaller hole hours earlier. Once it gained momentum, the hole quickly swallowed the large home.

At 7:21 a.m. on Friday, 911 dispatchers received a call about a boat that was falling into a hole that had formed at 21825 Ocean Pine Drive in Land O’ Lakes.

Firefighters arrived at the residence at 7:36 to discover the boat was already submerged in the sinkhole and the sinkhole was moving toward the house. Firefighters managed to rescue two dogs from inside the home

Family Had Moments to Escape Home Before it Collapsed From Sinkhole

A giant sinkhole in Florida is growing by the second after swallowing two homes Friday. The Ramirez family had just moments to flee when they heard the walls cracking in their home in Land O’ Lakes Friday morning. They could do nothing but watch as the sinkhole consumed their house. The entire town has since been evacuated. Authorities say about 100 homes are without power and it is not yet known when electricity will be restored. The sinkhole currently measures 200 feet wide but could grow.

Sinkhole swallows home, forces evacuations in Land O’Lakes neighborhood

LAND O’LAKES — What began as a small depression under a boat parked in a front yard quickly grew to a large sinkhole Friday, nearly swallowing one home, destroying another and prompting officials to declare at least 11 others unsafe.

Pasco County Fire Rescue crews were called to the 21000 block of Ocean Pines Drive in Lake Padgett Estates at 7:21 a.m. after someone noticed a depression forming under a boat parked behind a home, Division Chief Shawn Whited said.

When crews arrived at 7:36 a.m., the depression had already swallowed part of the boat and was expanding toward a nearby home at 21835 Ocean Pines Drive, Whited said.

“Within minutes, the hole opened up,” he said.

By 8:30 a.m., part of that house had collapsed. The people who live there had already left for work, but firefighters went into the home to retrieve two dogs and some of the home’s belongings.

“We got as much as we could as quickly as we could before it got too dangerous to be up there,” Whited said. “For the most part, they’ve lost everything.”

By 9:30 a.m., the hole had swallowed most of the house and a large portion of the house next door at 21825 Ocean Pines Drive. That family was home and able to get out safely.

Two hours later, the hole had grown to some 200 feet wide, consuming a large swath of Ocean Pines Drive.

A state geologist came to the scene and confirmed it was an active sinkhole.

Dramatic video shows the first home collapsing into the hole, roiling the muddy, debris-filled water inside it. In live footage shot by news helicopters circling, chunks of earth at the western edge of the hole could be seen falling away and splashing into the water, slowly consuming the front yard of a house across the street.

County building officials were tagging homes on Ocean Pines Drive and Canal Street with brightly-colored stickers noting the structures are unsafe, said Kevin Guthrie, assistant county administrator for public safety. Officials had tagged about 11 homes by midday and more may be affected, Guthrie said.

“If we need to come knock your door, you need to be ready to go,” Guthrie said. “The sinkhole is by no means stable.”

Duke Energy cut power to about 100 homes in the neighborhood east of U.S. 41 and north of State Road 54.

Property records show Walter Zanadoff bought the home in 2015.

Guthrie said a sinkhole under the first home to collapse Friday had been remediated about five years ago. Crews reinforced the foundation with steel pins that are now visible from the road.

A report done at the time estimated the sinkhole to be about 50 feet deep, Guthrie said.

“We believe that’s very true because we’ve had a portion of this house go into it and you cannot see that portion of the house any longer,” he said.

Property records show Walter Zadanoff purchased the 2,200-square-foot, single-story home in July 2015 for $157,000. Property records list “sinkhole activity” on the property as “stabilized” and the current just value of the home at $195,092.
