At least six people have been killed in New York after the driver of a truck mowed down people on a pedestrian and cycle path in Lower Manhattan. A man who emerged from the vehicle brandishing imitation guns was shot and arrested by police officers. Police urged people to avoid the area as a major emergency services operation got under way. New York City’s mayor and governor are at the scene. US media are calling the incident a terror attack. One eyewitness, identified as “Eugene,” told ABC Channel 7 that he saw a white pick-up truck driving fast down the cycle path alongside the West Side Highway, near Stuyvesant High School, at full speed and hitting a number of people.

Eight dead in terror attack after truck careens down a cycle path near Ground Zero before the male Uzbeki driver, 29, runs off and is shot by cops while waving paintball gun and yelling Allahu Akbar

• Eight people are dead and 11 people have been hospitalized in a serious but non life-threatening condition
• The truck driver was named by insiders as 29-year-old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, a citizen of Uzbekistan
• The Florida resident allegedly mounted West Side Highway bike path at 3.05pm on Tuesday at Houston Street
• He then continued southbound for 17 blocks, mowing down pedestrians, runners and cyclists, cops said
• Only when he crashed into a school bus at Chambers Street did he stop; he then hopped out of the truck
• The man was then seen brandishing two fake guns before being shot in the stomach by an NYPD officer
• He survived and was taken to hospital; he is out of surgery and remains under police supervision
