DOZENS of US tanks are ready for battle close to the North Korean border should war break out in the wake of Kim Jong-un’s latest missile test.

As the North Korea crisis reaches fever pitch, US tank crews have been conducting live firing drills near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in South Korea.

The Texas-based battalion has been practicing shooting pop-up targets as part of its training regime at a firing range close to the DMZ.

Captain Andrew Gregory, commander of the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, said tank crews are training to ensure they are “fully confident they can fight and win”.

Preparing them to fight on rough terrain at the front line if war erupted on the Korean peninsula is crucial to US military strategy, he said. 

“This fight [a potential conflict with North Korea] can come down to one or two tanks holding a critical road juncture or valley pass,” he added.

Meanwhile, South Korean soldiers carried out a military exercise in tanks near the border in Paju, South Korea, on Wednesday. 

The prospect of war has heightened considerably after North Korea launched another intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) – its “most powerful” yet.

North Korea supreme leader Kim Jong-un declared his hermit kingdom a “nuclear force” after launching the “upgraded” Hwasong-15 missile last night. 

US President Donald Trump vowed to “handle the situation” as the communist regime celebrated its successful launch.

Trump, who told reporters he would “take care of it” on Tuesday, is yet to reveal how the US will respond to the missile launch.

In the past, Trump has resorted to military pressure in the form of joint drills with South Korea and Japan aimed at intimidating North Korea. 

His tankers – known as “Mustangs” – could feature in his ground plans, alongside his Navy fleet of warships and aircraft carriers in the Pacific Ocean.

Gregory said his tank crew has been preparing for specific missions – such as countering weapons of mass destruction.

“But the bottom line is we’re a combined-arms battalion that needs to conduct offensive and defensive tasks,” he said.

“The tank crew is the building block for that.”

State television said Pyongyang had achieved its mission of becoming a nuclear state.

The Hwasong-15 missile, described as its “most powerful”, was launched in darkness early on Wednesday.

It landed in Japanese waters but flew higher than any other missile the North had previously tested. 

An analysis by the US-based Union of Concerned Scientists concludes that the missile could have traveled more than 13,000km on a standard trajectory, thus reaching “any part of the continental United States”.

But it seems likely, the analysis adds, that the missile had a very light mock warhead, meaning it might lack the power to carry a nuclear payload, which is much heavier, over that distance.

The test, which defied international sanctions imposed over the North’s weapons program, drew swift international condemnation, with the UN Security Council due to convene an emergency session.

South Korea responded by carrying out live-fire exercises, launching one of its own ballistic missiles. 

News of the launch was announced on state television in a special broadcast at midday, as well as in a report released by state news agency KCNA.

Pyongyang says the missile reached an altitude of 4,475km (2,780 miles) and flew 950km in 53 minutes, close to independent estimates made by South Korea’s military. Twice as hight as the International Space Station.

The projectile, fired at a steep incline, did not fly over Japan as some have done in the past, and landed about 250km short of its northern coast, according to Japanese officials.

North Korea has previously said that its projectiles can hit the US, but this marks the first time it says it can do it with this new type of missile, which appears to be an upgraded version of previous models.

KCNA added that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who personally signed off on the launch, “declared with pride that now we have finally realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force, the cause of building a rocket power”.

The report said that “as a responsible nuclear power and a peace-loving state”, North Korea would “make every possible effort to serve the noble purpose of defending peace and stability of the world”.

It said its weapons, meant as a defense against “the US imperialists’ nuclear blackmail policy”, would “not pose any threat to any country” as long as North Korean interests were not infringed upon.

North Korea however says the Hwasong-15 could reach mainland US carrying a “super-large heavy warhead”.
