Anunnaki 'Tree of Life' and Gilgamesh's Quest for Immortality - Explained

A brief account of the epic:

Anyone familiar with the Epic of Gilgamesh will know of his many adventures and of his obsession with immortality. The epic is set in ancient times, after the Great Flood (Noah’s Flood), when sanctuaries/cities were being restored. It begins by describing Gilgamesh being born of Uruk, offspring of Lugalbanda, and son of the August cow, Rimat-Ninsun, with Gilgamesh being two-thirds god, one-third human.

Gilgamesh is rather naughty at times and is described as a tyrant king who terrifies the people of Uruk with oppression, and by decreeing his “lord’s right”, to sleep with brides on their wedding night. It is said that the gods respond to the peoples outcry by creating an equal to Gilgamesh who will be able to stop his oppression. This equal was Enkidu, described as being covered in hair and living in the wild with the animals, an “offspring of the mountains”. Enkidu is later seduced by Shamhat (a temple harlot) and is brought to a shepherd’s camp to be civilized and installed as the night watchman. When Enkidu learns of Gilgamesh’s treatment of new brides he travels to Uruk to intervene, and the pair face-off in a fierce battle that concludes with them becoming friends.

On their first adventure together, Gilgamesh and Enkidu travel to the Cedar Forest to slay Humbaba (Guardian of the Cedar Forest), to establish fame and renown, and after a long journey, the pair eventually defeat Humbaba and return home, where Gilgamesh insults and rejects Ishtar’s proposal to be husband and wife. A furious Ishtar then travels up to the heavens and requests that Anu send the Bull of Heaven (possibly Gugulanna) to kill Gilgamesh for insulting her (“Father, give me the Bull of Heaven, so he can kill Gilgamesh in his dwelling”). After many threats and some pleading, Anu heard her words and placed the nose rope of the Bull of Heaven in her hand. The Epic states that Ishtar led the Bull of Heaven down to the earth, and all sorts of catastrophes unfold as a result.

Much to Ishtar’s displeasure, Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the “Bull of Heaven” and to add even further insult, Enkidu “wrenched off the Bull’s hindquarter and flung it in her face”. Ultimately, there were consequences for the actions of the pair, Enkidu had a dream that the Great Gods were in conference and it was stated that “Because they killed the Bull of Heaven and have also slain Humbaba, the one of them who pulled up the Cedar of the Mountain must die!”. In the end, it was Enkidu that fell ill and later died, prompting a great sadness within Gilgamesh, and a great fear of death.

The sadness and fear of death that Gilgamesh was now experiencing set him on his quest for immortality. He begins by seeking his ancestor, Utnapishtim (“The Faraway”), a survivor of the Great Flood (Utnapishtim and his wife were the only humans to have been granted immortality by the gods), to learn the secret of eternal life. After a long and perilous journey, and many attempts to dissuade him from his quest, Gilgamesh finds Utnapishtim and asks him for his help. At first, Utnapishtim warns Gilgamesh that the Anunnaki, the Great Gods, determined destiny, and they established Death and Life… he goes on to recount the time of the Great Flood and how Ea, the Clever Prince, instructed him to build a boat.

The epic states that after the flood Utnapishtim was blessed, that “Previously Utanapishtim was a human being. But now let Utanapishtim and his wife become like us, the gods!”. The blessing seems to be a unique gift to Utanapishtim and his wife, which leads Utanapishtim to ask Gilgamesh “who will convene the gods on your behalf, that you may find the life that you are seeking!”. Utnapishtim then challenges Gilgamesh to stay awake for six days and seven nights, but Gilgamesh fails the challenge and falls asleep as soon as he sits down. Utanapishtim has his wife bake a loaf of bread for every day Gilgamesh is asleep and place them by his head, she also “marks the wall” the day that he lay down as proof of Gilgamesh’s failure.

After his failure to stay awake, Gilgamesh washes and puts on a royal robe, ready to depart for Uruk, but as he is leaving, Utanapishtim gives him a parting gift. Utanapishtim discloses to Gilgamesh “a thing that is hidden”, he informs Gilgamesh that “There is a plant… like a boxthorn, whose thorns will prick your hand like a rose. If your hands reach that plant you will become a young man again”. The plant Utnapishtim was speaking of is located at the bottom of the sea, so Gilgamesh attaches heavy stones to his feet in order to reach the seabed and obtain the plant, he planned on testing the plant’s rejuvenation potential by testing it on an old man on return to Uruk. But sadly, for Gilgamesh, as he stopped at a spring to bathe, a snake smelled the fragrance of the plant and stole it, shedding its skin as it departed. At this point, feeling defeated, Gilgamesh breaks down and weeps at his futile efforts… he then returns to Uruk, and this is where the epic ends.

Explanation on the plant and connection with the Tree of Life:

The plant that Utanapishtim spoke of is what was known in the ancient world as the “Tree of Life”, and while on Earth, the Anunnaki would eat the fruit from the plant to help keep them muscular and healthy. Picking one of the fruits to eat in the day kept them extremely robust, it would boost testosterone in men and estrogen in women, which has an effect of making both sexes look, act and feel far more desirable. It’s not available commercially today and from Gilgamesh’s journey we can tell that very few knew about it in his time, it hasn’t been industrially grown since the Anunnaki left, but the plants are living submerged in the waters of the Baltic region, hence, Gilgamesh had to attach heavy stones to his feet in order to reach it. The water supply of the Baltic region continues to be titrated by the plant today, which is why their people, especially their women, are considered among the most beautiful in the world.

The fruit is reddish-purple in colour and similar to an artichoke in shape, which is why people think it is a pinecone in ancient depictions. The plant that produces it is a relative of the pine tree and it requires a huge amount of hydration, so it can live underwater comfortably. It cannot produce its fruit without sunlight, so when farmed industrially, it’s kept on dry land and its root system receives an immense amount of water, but in the present situation, being fully submerged in very deep water, it doesn’t produce any fruit. The medicinal properties found in the fruit, are also found in the tree itself, so while it is in the deep water, it is like a tea bag in a cup of tea, excreting just enough of its bounty into the water system to cause a noticeable difference in the populations drinking it.

In this depiction, we have the “Tree of Life” and two unknown males… this is actually a home “Tree of Life” that was kept at a family household for producing fresh fruit. The ring being clasped is attached to a hose on the wall, it unsnaps and goes around the base of the tree and keeps the roots down the vase heavily hydrated.
