A Tsunami Warning was mistakenly sent by an app, according to the National Weather Service.

False tsunami warning sent to the East Coast, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean

Some residents along the East Coast received a false tsunami warning on Tuesday morning as part of a monthly test by the National Weather Service.

A tweet from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston, South Carolina, said the alert was sent around 8:30 a.m. ET.

“We have been notified that some users received this test message as an actual Tsunami Warning,” the NWS tweeted, adding that a tsunami warning was “not in effect.”

In a statement to NBC News, the NWS said that a routine test was sent out and that the agency is investigating why it was communicated as an actual tsunami.

“The test message was released by at least one private sector company as an official Tsunami Warning, resulting in widespread reports of tsunami warnings received via phones and other media across the East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. We’re currently looking into why the test message was communicated as an actual tsunami warning, and will provide more information as soon as we have it,” the NWS said.

The agency said their test message “was not disseminated to the public via any communications channels operated by the National Weather Service.”

The push notification sent to phones in South Carolina was reportedly sent by the AccuWeather app, according to The Post and Courier of Charleston.

AccuWeather also tweeted that the notification was a test, not an actual warning.

“The National Weather Service Tsunami Warning this morning was a TEST. No Tsunami warning is in effect for the East Coast of the U.S.,” the tweet said.

It was not immediately clear how many people received the warning.

Similar reports were also made in New York, Boston, Miami and Houston

Hey, at least it wasn’t a missile alert.

Forecasters at Accuweather churned up a tidal wave of confusion Tuesday when the company sent New Yorkers a tsunami warning that was meant to be a test.

Accuweather pushed the alert to phones around 8:30 a.m., stating “tsunami warning in effect” until 9:28 a.m, citing the National Weather Service.

The alert that popped up on people’s phones did not mention it was only a test, though clicking the alert took users to Accuweather’s website, which states: “…THIS_MESSAGE_IS_FOR_TEST_PURPOSES_ONLY…”

An Accuweather meteorologist said the National Weather Service is to blame for the snafu.

“The weather service — they’re the ones that issue the warning — and when they do that, it sends it to our system,” said Tom Kines. “As soon it gets into our system it’s pushed out. There’s no intervention on our end.”

A National Weather service spokeswoman could not immediately say what went wrong, but the agency tweeted that it is investigating.

“A Tsunami Test was conducted earlier this morning, that did have TEST in the message. We are currently trying to find out how a message went out as a warning. We will update you when we find out more.”

Kines did not know how far the erroneous alert traveled, but social media users as far as Florida and Texas reported receiving it as well.

The flub comes weeks after Hawaii was plunged into 38 minutes of chaos when a state Emergency Management Agency worker accidentally sent out an incoming-missile alert.

And social media was quick to point out the similarities in Tuesday’s tsunami warning.

“This took 4 clicks in @accuweather to find out that the Upper West Side Tsunami Warning issued is only a test. Congrats to the Hawaiian Missile Alert Guy on his new gig at @NWSNewYorkNY,” wrote Twitter user West Side Yenta.

Invite Him into your life and to help you to turn from sin. Rejoice! You just became a Christian! Now trust in Him and get to know Him through the Bible which tells us everything we need to know and through prayer/talking to Him. He eagerly desires relationship with you.
