RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin says the country has developed a terrifying array of nuclear weapons that can reach anywhere in the world and are “invulnerable to enemy interception”, in claims that will cause shock around the globe.

In a speech to the Federal Assembly today, Mr Putin boasted Russia had developed missiles that no other nation possesses.

And in a thinly-veiled threat to the west, he said: “Russia remained a nuclear power, but no one wanted to listen to us. Listen to us now.”

The arsenal includes a new supersonic weapon that cannot be tracked by anti-missile systems, it is claimed.

Underwater drones that can carry nuclear warheads are also being tested by the secretive nation, the President said.

Once operational, they could be used to strike against aircraft and launch attacks on enemy shores.

And the Russian despot said military chiefs had an operational ballistic missile with a limitless range.

He claimed the missile could not be stopped by an US shield, as a video simulation played on a big screen.

Mr Putin said: “It’s a low-flying, difficult-to-spot cruise missile with a nuclear payload with a practically unlimited range and an unpredictable flight path.

“It can bypass lines of interception and is invincible in the face of all existing and future systems of both missile defence and air defence.”

Mr Putin claimed his army’s operation in Syria showed Russia’s increased military might.

The leader also warned Moscow would regard a nuclear attack on its allies as an attack on Russia itself and would immediately respond.

He said: “We would consider any use of nuclear weapons against Russia or its allies to be a nuclear attack on our country.

“The response would be immediate.”

He added Russia was also strengthening its military, transport and scientific infrastructure in the Arctic to safeguard its interests in the strategically important region.

The brags about his military prowess came as he set-out policies ahead of the upcoming Russian election he is certain to win.

And his claims came as the UK’s vice chief of defence staff, General Sir Gordon Messenger, warned the country needed a bigger budget to cope with the increased threat from Russia and its new weapons.

He told The Times: “There are capabilities being produced by those states that don’t see the world in the way that we do, that could do us harm.”

The Royal Marines officer said: We should be making the case for a bigger defence budget in order to respond to those types of threats that are changing all of the time.

“What I am not suggesting is that we are about to descend into world war any moment now, but I do think there are activities going on that need to be countered.”
