RUSSIA has accused Britain of “staging and directing” a suspected chemical weapons attack on civilians in war-torn Syria.

Syrian children await treatment after a suspected chemical weapons attack

The extraordinary claim from the Kremlin is the latest in a series of denials from Russian military chiefs about their involvement in the attack on the stricken city of Douma.

Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said: “We have evidence that proves Britain was directly involved in organising this provocation.”

Maj Gen Konashenkov said statements from Douma’s hospital claim people with video cameras entered the hospital, shouting that its patients were struck with chemical weapons and caused a mass panic.

He insisted doctors at the hospital said none of the patients were hurt by chemicals.
