For years, regular toothpaste has ruled the dental care aisle. Thankfully, natural toothpaste is making its way through the ranks, becoming a popular option for those who want a clean mouth without the risks that come with using regular toothpaste.

But what makes these two products vastly different? Here’s everything you need to know about natural toothpaste and why it’s the ideal option if you want a clean mouth without the need for harmful chemicals.

The Ingredients

One of the biggest and most important differences between regular and natural toothpaste are the ingredients. Let’s start with a well-known ingredient: fluoride. While this chemical is proven to fight cavities and protect the teeth, it’s toxic in large doses, especially to young children. It can also cause spots to develop on the teeth.

The problem with brushing with toothpaste that has fluoride is that you increase your risk of overexposure. Believe it or not, almost two thirds of public water is fluoridated, which means you likely get the amount of fluoride you need by simply drinking water each day. Natural toothpastes and powders don’t use fluoride at all!

Another problematic ingredient that’s found in most regular toothpaste is sodium lauryl sulfate, also known as SLS. This ingredient is what makes toothpaste foam. If you’re like most people, you assume foam is a good indicator that you’re getting in a good brushing.

The problem with SLS is that it’s quite powerful and is known to irritate soft tissue. This means it can cause mouth ulcers and discomfort. What’s even scarier is that SLS may be carcinogenic.

Aside from these two chemicals, there are other commonly used ingredients that can be harmful. Triclosan is widely used in toothpaste but was banned by the FDA in 2006 from being used in soaps and body washes because the chemical didn’t prove to add any effectiveness to the products. However, for some reason, the chemical is still allowed in toothpastes! Triclosan is an antibacterial agent that is said to fight plaque and other bacteria in the mouth.

While the ingredient may be good at keeping your mouth clean, it has serious health impacts. It’s been linked to:

  • Antibiotic-resistant germs
  • Altered hormone regulation
  • Increased risk of cancer

Since no one has the time to look through the ingredients on their toothpaste, it’s safest to go the all-natural route. Natural toothpaste doesn’t contain any of these harmful chemicals. The best natural toothpaste uses proven ingredients like essential oils, clays, and activated charcoal to keep your teeth clean.

A Little Goes a Long Way

If you’re like most people, your go-to product for dental care is toothpaste. While these products work, they contain a laundry list of ingredients, some of which you can’t even pronounce! If you’re one of those people who prefers straight-forward dental hygiene products, you’ll love the fact that natural tooth care products contain just the necessary ingredients. There’s no added preservatives, water, or chemicals.

The biggest perk is that these products are highly concentrated. This means a little goes a long way for your teeth and also your wallet!

Commonly used natural ingredients like clays and activated charcoal remove bacteria, polish the teeth, and even whiten your smile. Clays also contain an abundance of trace minerals: magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium, and others. These minerals are a must for stronger healthier enamel.

The Benefits

These days, toothpaste boxes advertise how they offer tartar control or whitening abilities. Isn’t it crazy to have to pick? The good news about natural toothpaste is that it offers total mouth care. Natural dental hygiene products get rid of toxins and bacteria that linger in the mouth. With clean teeth, you’re at a much lower risk of decay, gum disease, and other serious issues.

Since natural tooth care is often made with natural clays, you’re able to reintroduce important trace minerals back into your mouth. This process is called remineralization. As explained above, these minerals are needed to keep your teeth strong by strengthening the enamel which reduces the risk of sensitivity and discoloration. By brushing with a powder that’s high in minerals, your teeth will feel cleaner and stronger than they ever have.

Without the proper minerals in your teeth, you’re more susceptible to infection, decay, and discoloration.

Conclusion

While you may be in the habit of buying regular toothpaste, you’re putting your health at risk! Make the switch to natural toothpaste or tooth powder to not only have a cleaner and fresher mouth, but also stronger and whiter teeth.
