modern rockets are a heck of alot smaller and less powerful than the Saturn IV rockets and they also carry a great deal less fuel – the Saturn IV rocket could take the very much longer route through the thinnest parts of the Van Allen belts with no effect on the occupants
modern rockets HAVE to go through the strongest part of the Van Allen Belts because they lack the power and fuel to avoid it
