Today, critical thinking is subtly condemned and discouraged while joining and adhering to the cult of personality is condoned and encouraged. And I say subtly, because, of course, every individual who makes up a particular group likes to view themselves not only as critical thinkers but also as promoters of critical thinking. But hypocrisy reveals itself in individuals and groups when unprincipled words come out of their mouths conflicting with their calls to adhere to truth and when their immoral actions or inaction betrays the moral standards they claim to uphold.

Our sobering reality is that, if you are a member of a particular group or sometimes simply express that you like something or someone that a particular group likes, you are rewarded by the members of that group with acceptance. Acceptance, whether we realize it or not, make our lives easier, signals an end of uncomfortable and draining disagreements, gives us a dopamine release that makes us feel good and so, becomes an addictive and almost irresistible magnet that keeps us locked in and swirling around the epicenter of that acceptance in order to escape social discomfort. So, in a very real way this group acceptance culture, wittingly or unwittingly, it scarcely matters, is an exploitation of a deep longing in the human condition. The profound desire to belong and the intense aversion to being rejected.

If that same profound desire to belong to and be accepted by truth, justice, logic, love and reason alone were at work within us by general default, it’s hard to imagine that life wouldn’t be much much better. Because our thirst could only be quenched, and our hunger satisfied, by adherence to telling, hearing and being around those who TRULY benefited and enhanced this human experience on a level that infinitely transcends group identities.

If you’re normal, you fight every day against internal biases. Now, there is nothing wrong, in and of itself with having a bias, or a prejudice. The question is, upon what do we base our bias?

Bias, is that disproportionate weight or prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair or unsound. But bias can be a very good thing if it’s anchored on objective, observable, demonstrable and universal truth.
