Earlier, US Special Representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams suggested that the US might impose sanctions against Russia over the arrival of its military specialists in Venezuela, stating that “the Russians will pay a price for this”.

Earlier, the White House criticized the arrival of Russian military aircraft in Caracas, with Vice President Mike Pence calling it an “unwelcome provocation”. US President Donald Trump, in turn, demanded that Russia “get out” of Venezuela, while at the same time did not exclude the use of military force by the US in the country.

Colombia on Tuesday rejected a Russian warning against foreign military intervention in Venezuela and said it supported a peaceful transition to democracy in the neighboring South American country.

“Colombia reiterates that the transition to democracy must be conducted by the Venezuelans themselves peacefully and within the framework of the Constitution and international law, supported by political and diplomatic means, without the use of force,” Colombian Foreign Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo said in a statement.

The reported arrival of Chinese military personnel in Venezuela last weekend is undoubtedly a major event in world politics.

Unlike Russia, which has a history of force projection abroad, this is an extremely rare Chinese move. Although vital Chinese interests are at stake in the war against terrorist groups in Afghanistan and Syria, China refrained from publicizing any such deployment.
