PERSONAL: A Very Sad Day has been here for us

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

One of our two loving poodles, Cali, has been with us for almost 14 years. She would have been 14 years old in April 2012. However, because of her severe health condition, she will not make it to 14 years of age. We will be leaving at around 11:00 am on Monday, 2/13/12, for the veterinarian’s office to put her to sleep (upon the advice of our vet). We are going to have her cremated.  Karen has been crying about this inevitability for days.

Cali can hardly breathe. She coughs and coughs continually. She has lost 10% of her weight in the past 10 days. She cannot hear and can hardly see. She staggers when she walks and feels miserable. She has lost control of her urination ability. She has stopped eating her hard, dry dog food. She now subsists on wet dog food and treats.

Our other poodle, Kaci, has been with us for almost 13 years now. She will only have about another year to live also as she is beginning to cough off-and-on. Kaci will be so sad when Cali is gone. We will also miss Cali terribly. We may need to purchase another poodle puppy to keep Kaci company as she will certainly miss Cali because they have been the best of friends for all of these years.

The first toy poodle (Puffy) we had was during the first 14 years of our marriage. She didn’t make 14 years. Then, we got another toy poodle (Apricot) for the next 14 years of our marriage. She didn’t make it to 14 years either. Then, we got our third toy poodle (Cali) who will also not make it to 14 years. We got our fourth toy poodle (Kaci) when Cali was about a year old. I hope Kaci makes it to 14 years of age.

This experience is like losing a member of the family. I love our poodles. They are children to me. Only crazy dog lovers will understand why we have so much love for our canines. A dog is a man’s best friend is a true statement. We love you Cali.

We left at 11:10 a.m. today (2/13/12) for the vet’s office. Around 11:45 a.m., Cali left this earthlife. She went quietly and peacefully as we held onto her. Karen bawled her head off. I started to emote but quickly got control of my emotions. It was a wonderful 13 years and 10 months having Cali in our home. Before we left for the vet’s, Kaci lay next to Cali sensing what was coming up. I’ll post that photo when I can get a digital copy of it from Karen.

When we came home, Kaci was sad and listless. She is going to have a difficult time without Cali as her constant companion any longer. Karen immediately went on the Internet and started looking for potential toy poodles to buy for a companion for Kaci. We saw a beautiful little one in Lodi, California, priced at $500. I wonder if we can get that one?

Today (2/17/12), we brought home a two-pound, 10-week-old, black toy poodle. She is soooo cute and full of energy. Kaci is trying to get along with her. I remember when Kaci would bug Cali. Now, we will see this black little poodle bug Kaci. I think they will become the best of friends with Kaci mothering the little poodle as her little sister.

We have not yet settled on a name but will come up with a name in the next few days. The grandkids came over and were thrilled to see the new puppy. This puppy will be a great help to get Kaci out of the depression she seemed to have been in over the past four days since Cali’s passing. We really miss Cali. That’s it for now.

We are calling our new poodle “Cami.” So, now, we have Kaci and Cami…although, we will never forget Cali, Apricot, and Puffy. We put her in her bed in the bathroom with a gate separating her from our bed. As expected, she is whining and will probably do so all night until I get down on the floor and lie there with her. That’s what I did with Kaci when we first brought her home. I would bring her on the bed with Kaci and us, but she already dumped on the bathroom floor. I don’t want to allow Cami in our bed until we can potty train her. Cami’s whining sounds so pitiful. Poor thing.

Cami has become accustomed to living in our home. She feels right at home. Cami and Kaci sleep together in their little doggie beds. Cami goes over to Kaci’s bed and sleeps next to but touching her. Kaci welcomes it because she always wanted to sleep together with Cali. Kaci is still suffering depression from missing Cali. However, she is coming out of it because she and Cami are now playing chase together. I cannot see how anyone don’t like to have dogs around them. They provide nothing but love and devotion.
