American Birding Podcast: The Big Big Year Episode

Episode 4 of the American Birding Podcast is live now and it’s something of a special edition, a super-sized look at the major players in 2016’s impressive Big Year attempts.

I chatted with all four Big Year birders – Christian Hagenlocher, Laura Keene, Olaf Danielson, and new record-holder John Weigel – about their experiences, what they learned, and what they year of intense bird-finding taught them about the state of the birding community and themselves. They all have some really interesting things to say.

I also talk briefly with the previous record-holder, Neil Hayward, about his memoir on his own 2013 Big Year Lost Among the Birds and what he thinks about his own record being broken in such a dramatic way (well, technically four dramatic ways).

And in keeping with the Big Year theme, this episode runs a little longer than our previous episodes so if you’ve been enjoying the American Birding Podcast but what you really want is about 15 more minutes of talking about birds, this is definitely the episode for you.
