#ABArare – Fan-tailed Warbler – Arizona

The Red Warbler didn’t stick around long, but a couple of very nice ABA Area warblers took its place in southeast Arizona. The most notable of which is an ABA Code 4 Fan-tailed Warbler in Cochise County, found by RIck Taylor at his home on April 13.

The bird has been seen at East Whitetail Canyon on the east side of Chiricahua National Monument. Google Maps places the Taylor home on Hilltop Road, just past the Colibri Winery. Birders in the area suggest that the easiest way to to find the location is to use the GPS coordinates, 31.999N, 109.272W, as the road names on Google may not match the names on street signs in the area. The bird is apparently easy to find at this location, feeding on the lawn in full view of assembled birders, unusual behavior for a species known to be notoriously skulky.

Fan-tailed Warbler is a large warbler in the widespread neotropical genus Basileuterus that ranges from northwest Mexico to northern Nicaragua. Since the 1st ABA Area record in 1961, the species has been recorded a handful of times in the southwest, mostly in Arizona and mostly in spring, so this recent individual is right on target. Howell, et al in Rare Birds of North America notes that Fan-tailed Warbler is partly migratory, with most ABA birds representing spring overshoots. In addition to the Arizona record, there are single records from both New Mexico (2009) and Texas (2007).
