Giffords Showing More Recovery, Speaking in Full Sentences

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is able to speak in full sentences, her ability to walk has improved, and her breathing tube will be removed next week, media reports on Friday say.

Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, was shot in the head during a mass shooting two months ago in Tuscon and was critically injured.

“I’m very happy to report that she’s making leaps and bounds in terms of neurological recovery,” Dr. Dong Kim told ABC News.

Giffords said that she does not remember being shot in the head. Her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, told her about the shooting but did not mention that six people were killed or that 12 others were injured, according to the report.

{etRelated 52795, 52403}”She has a personality that’s already showing through,” Kim told ABC. “She’s very upbeat, focused on getting better. … She’s just been very forward looking and, even with the speech, she’s not showing much frustration.”

Reuters reported that Giffords may be in good enough condition to watch the space shuttle launch piloted by her husband. “The goal is for her to witness the launch in April,” said Dr. Gerard Francisco.

“Our number one concern is that it will be safe and appropriate for her to do that … we are still planning, we have a lot of options we are considering at this point,” he said, according to the news agency.

Jared Lee Loughner, 22, has been charged with the shootings, pleading not guilty on 49 charges in a federal court, Reuters reported.
