Watercolor #painting: Arch Rock, Santa Cruz Island

Arch Rock, Santa Cruz Island 15.5×8 Watercolor

Last summer, my husband and I took a day trip around three of the five islands that make up Channel Islands National Park. We went with Island Packers – out of Ventura, California – and it was a memorable, magical, awe inspiring day. The ocean, islands, sea life and nature all conspired to marinate us with wonder & amazement at this beautiful place we live in. (If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you may recall this post were I blabbed about how that one adventure bumped me off-task for the next few weeks in the studio.)

I went back out there again in the Fall, and hiked for a day on Santa Cruz Island. I snapped over a thousand photos – on the way out, during the hike, and on the way back. Arch Rock is the first watercolor in a series remembering and documenting my experiences of this beautiful place.

My studio assistant is not impressed

My grandchildren saw this watercolor in process, and asked if I was painting the Mermaid Lagoon from Peter Pan. When the painting was finished, they noticed that I “forgot to paint the mermaids”, so we made one and let her go swimming for a little while.
