More playing with the paint this week with one of my colorful impressionist sunset paintings. As you’ve heard before, I know, it’s a broken record here, I like paint and lots of it. I’ve had several artists ask me how to start using more paint. So, I’m going to give you a few pointers.

How I start using thick paint in my impressionist sunset paintings.

  1. I first start with a very thin block-in. I very seldom start with lots of paint, because it’s a quick way to a mess.
  2. Mix bigger piles of paint. Don’t be stingy with your paint on the palette, because, obviously, how can you paint with lots and have a little.
  3. Then…it’s laying on the paint.
  4. It helps also to have subject matter that is familiar to you, because familiarity breeds confidence. And, confidence always helps.

Look at the violets, turquoise, pinks, orange and yellows in the painting which give the painting some of those nice, juicy paint colors in the sky. Values are really key to the success of the painting, which is due to the consistency in the values.

As with other paintings on my website, this one is offered with free framing and shipping. Here are your frame choices.

As I’m writing this today, I’m listening to some of my favorite music, Irish. I love the energy and emotion in the music. It’s music that has a lot of power to me and is a great way to start my morning. along with the beautiful sunrise that I saw this morning. It’s so hard not to grab the paints, but by the time I see it, it’s too late. Besides, I was driving my granddaughter to school this morning. Duty first.

Stay tuned for more colorful impressionist sunset paintings
