During the time at which these images were created the Catholic Church was the only entity in Italy allowed to perform autopsies. In fact, the Vatican actually paid Leonardo to live on the grounds of the Vatican so that he could document human anatomy without the risk of persecution.

During the beginning of his later years many people don’t realize that Leonard vanished for a long period of time. Even more bizarre about this disappearance is that when he returned to civilization Leonardo claimed he had been living in a cave the whole time.
