What, No Rapture at All? Let’s Look at Reasoning for that Belief

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Theology and Politics from a Conservative, Biblical Perspective

I am “friends” with a person on a social network who is very opinionated (nothing wrong with that), but of late, I’ve realized that some of her viewpoints are a bit skewed, to say the least. For some time now, I’ve been on the receiving end of numerous attacks from people who do not believe that the Bible teaches a PreTrib Rapture event. I’ve gotten used to their vitriol and false accusations.

This though is a bit different. If you read her words below, you’ll see that she does not believe in any rapture at all. This is not really that unusual because many people do not believe that there is any sort of rapture in the future for Christians. It’s how she arrives at her opinion that is very odd and, dare I say, fully incorrect as we’ll see.

My issue is how she interprets Scripture and that’s what I want to focus on here in this article. Again, I’m not going to spend time trying to prove (or not) the fact of the rapture. I want to take her argument apart and see if there is any real truth to it. Take the time to read through her comments a few times, will you? She is speaking to someone named “Raymond” and I have not edited her comments at all.

So you believe in the rapture theory? And you don’t believe all God’s prophecies are unfolding before our eyes, Raymond. Please research scripture a bit more and dont listen to man. There will be no rapture. You rely on 1 Thess which is taught incorrectly. “Clouds” are large groups of people — these “clouds” are those that have already passed on and are with God (the people around His throne); meeting God in the “air” is not literal — “Air” in Greek is “pneuma” which means “spirit”. In other words, we will meet Him in our spiritual bodies. It’s the only way we can meet Him, because He is spirit. Paul wrote the 2nd letter to the Thessalonians to clarify that, please read it starting at verse one. It clearly explains that Jesus will NOT be coming back until the “man of perdition” (Satan) appears first claiming to be the Jew’s Messiah, the Christian’s Jesus, and the Moozies 9th Imam, etc. He will be all things to all people and the whole world will whore after him except those of us who know who he is. Here, Raymond, to get you started: 2 Thessalonians 2 King James Version

2 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Some of the comments above are very reminiscent of those who have been or are part of the The Family International,” the “Children of God,” or the “Family of Love. Whether that is the case here or not, I can’t be sure. But please note that the individual quoted above without equivocation states that “clouds” are large groups of people and then further states that the word “air” is not to be taken literally because it means “spirit” (pneuma). Here’s the problem. She is clearly referencing the passage in Hebrews in which we learn that there is a great “cloud” of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1):

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…”

In this case, the writer of Hebrews is certainly using the term “cloud” in a symbolic sense. That much can be clearly seen from the context itself, which is often the best way to determine meaning. However, let’s look at Acts 1:9, where Jesus is seen to be taken up into the clouds. The text tells us…

“And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.”

The “He” in the text of course is Jesus. He actually ascended into the sky and was hidden out of sight by a cloud. In this case, should we assume that Jesus ascended into (and through) an actual cloud, or should we use the metaphorical meaning found in Hebrews 12:1? I think it is evident that when Jesus ascended into the sky above Him, He would likely have eventually gone into and through a cloud, a real grouping of ice crystals or water drops that form a body of what we call the “white stuff.” This would have blocked the disciples’ view of Him and helped snap them out of it, so to speak. There is actually no reason to take the cloud mentioned in Acts 1 as symbolic of something else, or that it means “a large group of people” as our friend wants to do with the passage in
1 Thessalonians.

She says that the word for “clouds” should be taken to mean “large groups of people.” The actual word used in the Greek text in the Thessalonians passage is nephelais and it literally means actual “clouds” in the sky. The usage of it in Hebrews is a different word completely. It is nephos, which can mean a mass of clouds as in a “great multitude.” When used figuratively (as the writer in Hebrews clearly does), it then can mean a great multitude of people, but only when used figuratively. There is no reason to take the word figuratively every time it is used in Scripture as it depends mainly on context.

For instance, the word “left” has several meanings, doesn’t it? It can refer to a direction traveled, it can mean how much one has remaining after using the rest, or it can relate to how a person thinks (e.g. politically). In fact, the word “left” can be an adjective, an adverb, or a noun. What determines that? Context, something our friend appears to be ignoring.

She does the same with the word “pneuma.” Unfortunately for our friend, the exact Greek word used in that portion of Scripture (Thessalonians) is aera, not pneuma. Because she believes (wrongly) that the word being used is pneuma, which is generally understood to be “spirit” in English, she then interprets the passage incorrectly, which makes sense she is using the incorrect word at the start. The Greek word actually used is aera, which correlates to our English word “air” and means the air above the earth.

You can see where her error takes her. She has interpreted the passage completely erroneously but to make matters worse, as can be understood from her “tone,” she is adamant that hers is the correct understanding and anyone who does not see it her way is simply and completely wrong. In fact, I tried to gently offer some correction to her, but she would have none of it. I was simply wrong and she doubled down.

When discussing things of this nature, it is important to leave the dogma on the side. That is not to say that people cannot have solid opinions about something. However, the way in which we discuss is important and those who believe they are on the same “team” so to speak, should approach things with grace. Unfortunately for her, no matter how I tried to offer my opinion – which differs from hers markedly – it didn’t matter. It was as though she couldn’t hear me. I’m sure she couldn’t because she was so involved in ensuring that her opinion was the only one that carried weight.

She does the same thing regarding her belief that the Antichrist IS Satan. I believe the Bible teaches that the Antichrist will be fully empowered by Satan, but will be a separate individual. In fact, Satan, the Antichrist, and the False Prophet together form the unholy trinity, as they attempt to mirror the true Trinity of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. When I pointed that out to her, it fell on deaf ears and she simply repeated her claim that Satan IS the Antichrist. Oh well. A person like this is not interested in the actual give and take of discussion. She is interested only in her opinion. That’s all that matters to her.

Unfortunately, it was easy to show where she went wrong. Equally as unfortunate is the fact that she cannot see it, as obvious as it is to see. My advice – if you’re asking – is to avoid entering into arguments that serve no purpose. We need to heed the apostle Paul’s words here when he says, “But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless,” (Titus 3:9). State your opinion and note the response. If you hit a brick wall, continued debate is pointless.

Naysayers are everywhere, there will be a rapture, Parable of the 10 Virgins.. Matt 25 the Foolish are left behind, vs 8 “the lamps are gone out’.. (and are now in the dark about His return !!!)

      • MikeSavage

        Crazy times;
The story about the 10 virgins does not represent what you claim it does. You have totally misunderstood Jesus’ teaching. It refers to being prepared for the Kingdom rule of Earth, not any being
“left behind”. There isn’t a “rapture”. That concept is a complete misunderstanding of when the remnant of the holy spirit annointed Christians (144,000) are taken to be transformed into spirit beings to co-rule Earth, from heaven, with Jesus, and to fight the final battle with him.

    • MikeSavage

Bear in mind, that the Christian Greek scriptures (new testament) are written, at God’s inspiration, BY holy spirit annointed Christians, TO holy spirit annointed Christians. NOT to Christians who are not so annointed. In other words, written by and to the 144,000, the only humans who are ever going to see heaven. The scriptures VERY CLEARLY TEACH that we don’t have an immortal soul, so no one can go to heaven, or to the fictitious hell of burning torment. Other scriptures tell us that the meaning of scripture is veiled from all who aren’t of the annointed, or who weren’t taught by the annointed. Currently only 14,500 are alive today of the annointed remnant. Only one thousand more than the year before. If one is being taught by the annointed, God will use holy spirit to unveil the meaning of the scriptures to that one. Otherwise, they haven’t a clue as to their meaning, and they interpret (guess) the meaning, which is NEVER correct, not even accidentally. So all these people claiming to know what this or that scripture means are lying. What people lyingly say is a rapture, is nothing more than the description of the remnant being transformed into spirit beings and being taken to heaven to hellp Jesus fight the final battle, and to rule Earth thereafter. They think that being baptized makes them annointed, but they’re wrong. The scriptures prove it. No immortal soul, as the soul that sins, it itself SHALL DIE. NOTHING survives death, no part of us either. Our THOUGHTS DO PERISH.

It looks as if at least 4 people don’t like anyone bringing up their pagan beliefs.

You did your best, and maybe you planted a seed. That’s all you can ask for. You can’t force someone to see things your way.

Try actually studying all of the verses.

      CHRIST’S SECOND COMING

#25. The second coming of Christ is the hope of the church, the climax of the gospel, when Jesus will come literally, personally, loudly, visibly on a cloud (never touching the earth), and with all of His holy angels. Jesus pointed to signs of the times that would testify that His coming is at hand. And the almost complete fulfillment of all the various lines of prophecy indicates “He is near, even at the doors.” (John 14:1-3; Titus 2:11-14; Heb. 9:28; Acts 1:9-11; Rev. 1:7; Matt. 25:31; Luke 9:25; 21:25-33; Matt. 24:14,36-39,33 margin)

      THE FIRST RESURRECTION

#26. The righteous dead will be raised to life at Christ’s second coming (advent). Together with the righteous living, they will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air, and will go with Him to heaven, there to spend one thousand years (the millennium). The wicked that are living at the time of Christ’s second advent will be slain by the brightness of His coming. These, with the wicked dead of all ages, will await the final resurrection, at the close of the one thousand years. (Rev. 1:7; John 5:25,28,29; Hosea 13:14; 1 Cor. 15:51-55; 1 Thess. 4:13-18; John 11:24,25; 14:1-3; Rev. 20:4,5,6; Isa. 25:8,9; 2 Thess. 1:7-10; 2:8; Jude 14,15; Rev. 20:5,12,15; John 5:28,29; Acts 24:15; Isa. 24:21,22).

      THE FINAL RESURRECTION

#27. At the end of the one thousand years, the following events will take place: (a) Christ and the righteous will descend from heaven, with the Holy City, the New Jerusalem (Rev 21:2,10); (b) the wicked dead will be resurrected (Rev 20:11,12); (c) Satan, his angels and the wicked will receive the final wages of sin when fire comes down from God out of heaven to utterly destroy them, death and hell. This is the second death (1 Cor. 15:26; Rev 20:7-10,14,15); and (d) this fire, which destroys the works of sin, will purify the earth (2 Peter 3:10-14; Mal. 4:1-3; Rev. 20:4,8).

      THE NEW EARTH

#28. The earth, cleansed by fire and re-created by the power of God, will become the eternal home of the redeemed and God Himself will live with them. (2 Peter 3:9-13; Isa. 65:17-25; 35:1-10; 45:18; Matt. 5:5; Mal. 4:1-3; Prov. 11:31)

Why don’t you look at the scriptures without filtering them through the lens of religion, or the teachings of religion? Religions do not teach accurately what the scriptures say. They are not working in God’s favor, nor ours. Study the scriptures on their own merit, comparing each scripture to each other scripture to see if your understanding is correct. If it conflicts, change your understanding of them.

It is ironic to me to how “selfish” Evangelical Christians believe so much in their physical rapture moment, but these are the same people that most criticize the physical assumption into Heaven, of the Woman whom the Angel called “Full of Grace” Mary, the mother of God.
All of these people must be more full of grace than even the mother of Jesus!
This rapture notion is one that has received the most attention, mainly in the US over the past 50 years, but has gained more momentum in the last 20-25 years.
It is interesting to not how the movement has seen its major growth and acceptance in popular culture at the same time people throughout the world have become more egocentric and selfish minded.
Jesus references that it would be like in the days of Lot, when the Son of Man returns. Who was left behind in that case??? it was Lot, he obeyed God’s rules, and was protected here on earth, not in some “raptured” state. Was Noah raptured prior to the flood? Was Moses raptured prior to the Angel of Death’s visit on Passover? Were any of the prophets spared their moment of testimony and suffering prior to their deaths???
Or rather was it their deaths, in the Faith, in the face of extreme persecution that God accepted their deaths as the ultimate sacrifice for what they believed in?
The devil visited Jesus in the Garden, and tempted Him in a moment of human weakness, to not go through the suffering and be spared His Good Friday moment.
Just like today, the devil tempts and seduces people through this “false rapture” notion where people too will be spared suffering, suffering that is redemptive in order to cleanse the world of so much sin.
The example of the 10 virgins is a mere reference to who will and will not be ready when He returns to earth, just as there were few people who were ready during His first visitation, so too will there be even fewer people expecting Him during His Second coming.
Mike Savage references the literal 144,000 from the Book of Revelation. The bad thing about that is that both Dan and Ephraim are missing and most of the Dutch, Anglo descendants are from the Tribe of Dan, who is missing due to their idolatry in money, fame, their flesh, and the fact that these nations are the nations from where Freemasonry and the luciferian Illuminati sprang up from centuries ago.

…Elijah, said..”It is interesting to note how the movement has has seen its major growth and acceptance in popular culture at the the same time people throughout the world have become more egocentric and selfish minded.”…..
He nailed it. And this is precisely what the ‘fly-away’ doctrine is all about…..a selfish desire to be spared even seeing, what the Lord has for each of us….In a personal individual manner.

I’ve had the thought that judgment itself is determined by the manner in which each of us faces the LORD.
Run to ‘daddy’ like a three year old happy to see his father….or hide your face like the burglar “daddy” caught in the bedroom.

1st Thess 4:17 uses the word cloud, from the Greek word “nephelais”. The text follows:

17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Then in 2 Peter 2:17 the same word cloud is used, from the same Greek word “nephelai”. The text follows:

      12These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

In Peter the word cloud, as the word trees is used as Peter is describing people. But the following comment by Barnes I thought was really good:

Then we which are alive – Those who shall then be alive; see Th1 4:15. The word here rendered “then” (ἔπειτα epeita), does not necessarily mean that this would occur immediately. It properly marks succession in time, and means “afterward, next, next in the order of events;” Luk 16:7; Gal 1:21; Jam 4:14. There may be a considerable interval between the resurrection of the pious and the time when the living shall be caught up to meet the Lord, for the change is to take place in them which will fit them to ascend with those who have been raised. The meaning is, that after the dead are raised, or the next thing in order, they and the living will ascend to meet the Lord. The proper meaning of the word, however, denotes a succession so close as to exclude the idea of a long interval in which other important transactions would occur, such an interval, for example, as would be involved in a long personal reign of the Redeemer on earth. The word demands this interpretation – that the next thing in order after the resurrection of the righteous, will be their being caught up with the living, with an appropriate change, into the air – though, as has been remarked, it will admit of the supposition of such a brief, momentary interval ἐν ἄτομος ἐν ῥιπη ὀφθαλμου en atomos en rhipē ophthalmou, Co1 15:51-52) as shall be necessary to prepare for it.

Shall be caught up – The word here used implies that there will be the application of external force or power by which this will be done. It will not be by any power of ascending which they will themselves have; or by any tendency of their raised or changed bodies to ascend of their own accord, or even by any effort of their own will, but by a power applied to them which will cause them to rise. Compare the use of the word ἁρπάζω harpazō in Mat 11:12, “the violent take it by force;” Mat 13:19, “then cometh the wicked one and snatcheth away;” Joh 6:15, “that they would come and take him by force; Joh 10:12, “the wolf catcheth them;” Act 8:39, “the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip; Co2 12:2, “such an one caught up to the third heaven;” also, Joh 12:28-29; Act 23:10; Jde 1:23; Rev 12:5. The verb does not elsewhere occur in the New Testament In all these instances there is the idea of either foreign force or violence effecting that which is done. What force or power is to be applied in causing the living and the dead to ascend, is not expressed. Whether it is to be by the ministry of angels, or by the direct power of the Son of God, is not intimated, though the latter seems to be most probable. The word should not be construed, however. as implying that there will be any reluctance on the part of the saints to appear before the Saviour, but merely with reference to the physical fact that power will be necessary to elevate them to meet him in the air. Will their, bodies then be such that they will have the power of locomotion at will from place to place?

In the clouds – Greek, “in clouds” – ἐν νεφέλαις en nephelais – without the article. This may mean “in clouds;” that is, in such numbers, and in such grouping as to resemble clouds. So it is rendered by Macknight, Koppe, Rosenmuller, Bush (Anasta. 266), and others. The absence of the article here would rather seem to demand this interpretation Still, however, the other interpretation may be true, that it means that they will be caught up into the region of the clouds, or to the clouds which shall accompany the Lord Jesus on his return to our world. Mat 24:30; Mat 26:64; Mar 16:19; Mar 14:62; Rev 1:7; compare Dan 7:13. In whichever sense it is understood, the expression is one of great sublimity, and the scene will be immensely grand. Some doctrine of this kind was held by the ancient Jews. Thus rabbi Nathan (Midras Tillin, 48:13) says, “What has been done before will be done again. As he led the Israelites from Egypt in the clouds of heaven, so will he do to them in the future time.”

..Rodney…Caught up. Seventh trump….all surrender physical identification. Life goes on from here. Those who have been chosen and those who have prepared themselves, carry on. But sadly for most souls, its gonna be a real scramble to find some kind of “non-physical” identity. Some sort of “belonging”…. and the hucksters and false prophets will be “scrambling”, too.
Our stay in the paradise, is a winnowing process….all craziness will be shown, for what it is….the souls still have personal opinions, and will even “see” the devil, in bonds. There’s definitely a chance for enlightenment, and to establish a relationship with the Lord. Not a second chance, exactly….more of an opportunity to “think right”, for those poor souls that never had a chance.
..We’ll ALL be within sight of the Throne of God….Some will be close enough to address Abraham. Some will be on the other side of a gulf, far away from the Throne.

Here is an interesting take on the rapture…As I read this mans post I keep thinking about how many times we get it wrong. The Jews had the original languages, knew the customs, memorized the scriptures, and still only 2 people Met baby Jesus in the temple.

As I said, nothing but naysayers everywhere  , who turn the Word of God into renditions of mere men.

The Bride is GOING TO THE FATHERS HOUSE ..which is obviously in Heaven; TO GET THERE, the Bride MUST BE ‘CAUGHT UP”…. to fulfill….. THE WORD OF GOD…..as it is written

        John 14:2…(emp MINE)

“In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go TO PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU. “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you TO MYSELF, that where I am, there you may be also.”

“receive you to MYSELF”…( NO reaping/gathering done by Angels) or protection on Earth during “Jacobs Trouble” for the Bride, She’s is GOING to be a Pillar in the Temple of God…in Heaven

Rev 3:10 Because you have KEPT THE WORD of My perseverance, I WILL keep YOU FROM THE HOUR, of testing, THAT HOUR which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the Earth.

So your kept from WHAT !! …The Beast AKA. SATAN …the whole Hour, THAT HOUR, of his Reign.

“but they receive authority as kings with THE BEAST FOR ONE HOUR…Revelation 17:12

“These have one purpose, and they give their power and authority TO THE BEAST.

        Revelation 3:12
12′He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in THE TEMPLE of My God, and HE will NOT GO OUT FROM IT ANYMORE; and I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which COMES DOWN OUT OF HEAVEN from My God,..(How did the Bride get there ?)

to get there, HEAVEN, The BRIDE MUST MEET Him in the Air.1 Thessalonians 4:17 rev 3:10

Then WE who are ALIVE and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to MEET the Lord in the AIR, and so WE shall ALWAYS BE WITH the Lord….clear as glass ….as it is written.

.”go ye out to meet him”……”The 10 virgin parable of Matt 25 …the WISE believers….

“were ready and WENT in WITH HIM to the Marriage: and the DOOR WAS SHUT” verse 6

I looked, and behold, A DOOR standing OPEN IN HEAVEN, and the first voice which I had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things.” Immediately I WAS IN THE SPIRIT;………. Revelation 4:1

I make no apologies for…A RESCUE WILL Occur BEFORE the reign of the Beast rev 6:!, as per the Word of God.

  2 Peter 2:9 the Lord knows how to RESCUE the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for… the Day of Judgment.
