It’s All About Dominionism, Kingdom Now, and the New Apostolic Reformation, Part 2

Theology and Politics from a Conservative, Biblical Perspective

Last time, we briefly defined Dominionism and there is much more we need to say about that, which is what this short series is all about. As we noted previously, Dominionism is essentially the belief that the Church must move against the kingdom of darkness by taking “back” society. This is allegedly done by electing conservative (Christian) politicians, regaining control of the educational system, etc., etc., etc., yada, yada, yada.

Once the Church is able to regain the control over these things that was taken from God by Satan (it is alleged), then and only then will Jesus be able to return to this earth. There are many terms and labels that all connect to Dominionism, but though that is the case, there are differences between, say for example, Dominionism proper and Christian Reconstructionism. Unfortunately, we do not have time to highlight all the differences and it would become very tedious trying to do that. Instead, we’ll hit the highlights and go from there.

Here is a definition of Christian Reconstructionism from Bob DeWay.

A recent theological movement known as Christian Reconstruction has made a significant impact on American Christianity in the past several decades. It is based on a Reformed, Calvinistic view of theology with some significant, unique twists. The most prominent one is the conviction that the Scripture gives the church a mandate to take dominion over this world socially and culturally before the bodily return of Jesus Christ. This teaching is known as the “dominion mandate.” Genesis 1:26-28; Genesis 9:1-5 and Matthew 28:18-20 are the principal Biblical passages used to prove the validity of this mandate.

Here is a definition highlighting differences between Dominionism, Theonomy, and Christian Reconstruction.

Dominion theology refers to a line of theological interpretation and thought with regard to the role of the church in contemporary society. Dominion theology is also known as Christian reconstructionism and theonomy. Dominion theology states that biblical Christianity will rule all areas of society, personal and corporate. Christian reconstructionism reasons that society will be reconstructed by the Law of God as preached in the gospel and the Great Commission. Theonomy is a post-millennial view believing that all of the moral laws contained in the Old Testament are yet binding today. Although these might sound somewhat disparate, they have all been closely linked together to the point that people often use the terms interchangeably.

There are yet differences between the belief systems highlighted in the above two definitions and New Apostolic Reformation, which grew out of Calvinism. Suffice it to say though, that in spite of any differences in definitions, the general similarity is found in the fact that, in some way or another, the Church must do what it takes to take society back from Satan and those who knowingly or unknowingly abet him and his kingdom. Though proponents of Christian Reconstructionism point to Scripture and even support the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18-20, the Great Commission they support is really simply the starting point for their work. The goal is to evangelize the lost so that they, in turn, will work to change society. Evangelism then is simply a means to add more soldiers to the Lord’s army. The end result of evangelism is not simply in seeing souls come to the Lord for salvation, who in turn become witnesses for Christ, evangelizing others.

Dominionism in all its various forms sees the Great Commission as merely a way of bringing in more people to be added to Team Jesus. We then march on society taking as much of it back as possible so that Jesus can return sooner. The more work that is accomplished by Christians in taking society back for Christ, the sooner He will be able to return to reign. In other words, the Church’s “gift” to Jesus (if you will) is a society (not simply saved souls), that has been completely turned around and offered to Jesus.

The tragedy here is manifold. Imagine the Christians of the first to third centuries. They had an impact on society without doubt. However, their impact was seen in how many Christians were martyred for their faith. Other than that, they had virtually no impact on the Roman Empire culturally, socially, or especially morally. The Roman Empire continued to do what it did, with people living as they lived. There was no societal change. In fact, one can almost measure the amount and intensity of persecution and martyrdom against Christians as though it was Satan’s extreme anger over the fact that he lost at the cross, so visceral was that persecution leading to the deaths of innumerable Christians.

Do we think for a moment that those Christians who were used as bait for wild animals or target practice for soldiers in the Roman coliseums were not committed to Jesus? They were so committed that they wouldn’t even think of recanting their faith! How about the time during Nero when Christians were persecuted to death often by being nailed to wooden crosses, covered in pitch and set ablaze (AD 67), Domitian (AD 81), Trajan (AD 108), or other persecutions during AD 162 and AD 192? If you want to know what it meant to be a Christian during the centuries before America was even a blip on the horizon, read Foxes Book of Martyrs (click on the link to read the book free online).

What is interesting to say the least is that in spite of the persecution, the Church continued to grow, with numbers added daily! This was Satan’s near all-out war against the saints and though thousands were put to death, that fact did not keep people from becoming believers.

Yet, Christians today have the audacity to think that this current generation of Christians is “special” and God was just waiting for our generation to show up because of the “potential” that we apparently have and previous generations did not. Now, God can actually DO something! This is Chris Mathis’ perspective as pointed out in a previous post here. The unmitigated gall of some people.

Frankly, I think too many of us Christians have become way to comfortable, way to confident, and way to proud to willingly undergo even 1/10 of what the Christians went through in times past. They went to their deaths gladly knowing what awaited them. It would not surprise me if persecution comes to the even here in America in far greater measure to deepen our faith and commitment to the Lord.

But too many Christians today are worried about this political candidate or that one or loss of our “rights.” They spend their time telling stories of having been taken to heaven where they had a chat with Jesus and how they received a “mantle” of authority. Still others talk about this guy or that one being anointed by God to be the next president and God is going to start killing those who speak against that “anointed.”

Probably one of the bigger (if not biggest) problems with Dominion Theology (in all its various forms) is that it essentially denies the truth behind the physical second coming of Jesus!

This earth cannot be saved by mystical preachers and their massive schemes of Dominionism or “Taking Possession Over The Earth.” This idea has become dominant over much of the church world and the Antichrist loves it.

If anything, the title deed to earth was stolen from Adam and Eve through their willful disobedience of God’s simple rule. But it is very clear that not only did God know this would occur, but allowed it and made provision for it. God knew what would occur and allowed it because of purposes that are too high for us to fully understand. I find it fascinating that on the day and time when Satan through the serpent chose to approach Eve, there is no mention of God being in the vicinity. Certainly He was there, but deliberately took a hands-off approach so that what would happen would happen. If you’ll take the time to read Revelation 5, you’ll see that Jesus (the Lamb) was found worthy to open the seven-sealed scroll (what many conservative scholars believe represents the title deed to earth).

In other words, Jesus’ earthly work, culminating in the cross, provided the complete, utter, and final victory over Satan, his minions, and his kingdom. It is a done deal, hence Jesus’ words “IT IS FINISHED!” (John 19:30). He paid the price. He fulfilled the Law at all points. He obeyed the Father every moment of every day without fail. He – Jesus – gained the victory without any help from any human being. God the Son did it all. He fought on our behalf and won. He went into battle against Satan and had no trouble defeating him at every turn. Jesus IS the Victor. We either fall in line behind Him or we stand opposed to Him, but friend, make no mistake, we cannot add or subtract to any of the work that He accomplished and once again, it is FINISHED. It merely waits for the fulfillment of times for prophecies to come to fruition. They wait not because we have work to do (though we should most definitely be about the Father’s business), but because of God’s timing, period.

There is not one thing that Christians can do to add or even subtract from the work of Jesus anymore than if we fail to evangelize the lost, God would actually allow people who want salvation to die without receiving it. We are invited to be part of God’s program He calls the Great Commission. However, whether or not we actually participate in it does not mean that people who want to be saved will or won’t become saved. We are simply privileged to participate in God’s program of evangelizing the lost. Our involvement in that program means we can earn crowns for ourselves and by the way, those crowns we can earn through our good works (salvation is not a crown we can earn!), are the very ones we will remove and gently, lovingly toss at Jesus’ feet in eternity. To fail to obey the Lord and help fulfill the Great Commission means a loss of reward for us (1 Corinthians 3:12), but in no way – and I want to be clear – in NO WAY will a lost person who wants salvation not find it because of us. Look at the incident of the thief on the cross as merely one example of that (Luke 23). Who preached to the thief? Who led him in the “sinner’s prayer”? Who shared the four spiritual laws with him? No one that I can find yet something or Someone opened his eyes. He saw the truth about Jesus and he embraced that truth. His faith saved him that day, just hours before his death.

What God rolled out after our first parents sinned (and Satan gained more control over the earth) is nothing less than perfection yet, at every turn, Satan has been doing whatever he can to thwart God’s plans. He has always failed though to many today, it appears as though God is not doing anything or can’t.

Evil isn’t winning. Though it may seem that way, it is far from it. It’s all part of God’s plan and He does not need any of us to carry it out though He has chosen to use some who will answer His call. In fact, while He graciously allows us to be part of the picture (and doesn’t have to), He in no way expects us to carry the brunt of the work anymore than He expects us to earn our salvation. You didn’t earn your salvation, right? Jesus literally bought it for you. You received it what He bought. Satan will receive the consequences of Christ’s victory at some point in the future. For now, God allows Satan to live as though he is still in control, but his end is certain (Revelation 20:10).

Dominionism teaches that Christians must regain control over the earth and until we do, Jesus cannot return. This is so deceptively unscriptural, it could have only come from the pit of hell. Yet, it sounds so spiritual, doesn’t it? After all, Paul speaks of the battle we are in, in the heavenly realms, right? But the battle is essentially over lost souls. Those are the people we “battle” for in prayer and through personal evangelism.

Dominionists fail to realize exactly how heretical their beliefs are because above all things, God’s unmeasured sovereignty is tarnished by their beliefs and teachings. To Dominionists, God is not sovereign and must wait upon His Church to move, to act, to be that vehicle for change before God can do anything. Apparently, He’s been waiting just over 2,000 since the time of Jesus and much longer than that before He came to this earth.

As important as His physical return is to this earth in victory and triumph, the fact that people actually believe that in order for Jesus to be able to actually return, His Church has to create the situation in society that precipitates His return is not only the height of absurdity but hubris!

Next time, we’ll look at some specific quotes from some of the “names” within the Dominionism movement. What is most interesting is how often Dominionists actually deny that Dominionism exists!
