Extra-Spectacular Double Meteor Shower: Orionids & Southern Taurids Set to Put on a Dazzling Display
A celestial traffic jam may be on tap next week as two meteor showers combine forces to put on a brilliant sky show. This year the Orionid meteor shower is expected to peak in the night of October 20-21 when the Southern Taurid meteor shower is just starting to ramp up.
Together the showers will produce anywhere between 40 and 50 shooting stars per hour under clear, dark skies. The new moon during the peak of the double meteor shower may actually allow for a much more spectacular display.
Most people around the world can see the showers, best seen with the naked eye in a dark, rural area away from city lights. So log off, pack up your stargazing kit and enjoy the show
