A Song of Ice and Fire, Books 1-4 (A Game of Thrones / A Feast for Crows / A Storm of Swords / Clash of Kings)

For those of you who don’t know HBO has been running a series called Game of Thrones. It is now in its second season. The series is taken from a series of books by the same name written by George R.R. Martin. Until I started watching the series I didn’t even know who he was. But just allow me to back up a bit.

My husband decided he was going to watch this new series last season and I was not to impressed because I am not into soft porn which sometimes this series has. But then I got hooked. The story line is amazing. You need a score card to keep up with all the characters that come and go. The settings are over the top and the dialouge keeps you on the edge of your seat.

When the first season ended I couldn’t wait for the second one to begin. So I ordered the books. They are even better than the series. Because as we all know much has to be left out of film in order to not over run the hour show. Martin makes the reader crawl in the book and become part of the story. He ends his chapters leaving the reader dangling on the edge of a cliff. Sometimes you don’t know what really happened until later and later can be the next book. There are four books in the first series. The beauty is the books do not pick up where the last one ended. But they flow.

Martin writes his books so that you the reader find your own favorite characters and the good guys don’t always win. You grieve when they lose and you get angry when they die. His ability to draw the reader into the story is the best I have ever read hands down.

His books are not short books they are well over 1000 pages long but you don’t know that you have read that many pages until you are done. At the end of the books he gives the reader an appendix which has all athe familes and their offspring so that you the reader can keep up. He also adds a teaser for the next book but it isn’t a chapter at the beginning of the next book.

The Game of Thrones is exactly that. It is several groups of people fighting over seven kingdoms and the right to be king. It is full of fantasy, magic and sword play. It will keep the reader entertained even when they are not reading. The characters get in one’s head and stays there begging to be heard from again.

Martin is an amazing author. I am just so sorry that I waited so long to be introduced to him.
