Yahoo may have been hit by hackers in a data breach affecting roughly 200 million users.
Rumors of the alleged breach began popping up in August when a hacker know as ‘Peace‘ bragged about scoring 200 million Yahoo usernames and passwords. The hacker subsequently offered to sell them on the dark Web.
At the time the rumors began circulating, Yahoo announced its security team was investigating the claims mad by ‘Peace.’ According to Re/code, the Internet giant will this week confirm that it’s system was indeed breached in a “widespread and serious” attack.
Yahoo has yet to respond to requests for comments from the media.
News of the breach comes as just a few months after Verizon agreed to acquire Yahoo’s Internet business for $4.83 billion in cash. Once the deal closes in the first quarter of 2017, after receiving regulatory approval, Yahoo is to be integrated with AOL.
