Samsung Woes Continue With Faulty Washing Machines

The hits keep coming for Samsung.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning about certain Samsung top-loading washing machines made between March 2011 and April 2016 after receiving a number of complaints, some of which referenced “exploding” machines as well as machines violently breaking apart during the spin cycle.

Following the warning from the CPSC, Consumer Reports on Wednesday suspended its recommended status for any Samsung top-loader that earned that designation in the organization’s washing-machine tests, saying the washers “pose a risk of personal injury or property damage.”

The CPSC said it is “actively and cooperatively working with Samsung to address safety issues.”

Samsung, in obvious damage control mode, said in a statement that “it is important to note that Samsung customers have completed hundreds of millions of loads without incident since 2011,” but admitted that, in “rare cases, affected units may experience abnormal vibrations that could pose a risk of personal injury or property damage.”

Samsung has not released which model numbers are affected. Instead, the South Korean firm has put together a support page for customers to enter the 15-digit serial number located on their washer to discover if the machine is indeed affected.

Samsung is urging customers with affected models to use only the lower speed delicate cycle when washing bedding, bulky or water-resistant materials until a solution is announced. The company said there does not appear to be any issues when using the delicate cycle.

The washing machine issue comes just weeks after Samsung was forced to halt sales of its latest flagship, the Galaxy Note 7, and issue a global recall after discovering the phones have a “battery cell issue” that could case the handsets to explode or catch fire.
