Microsoft Halts Sales of PCs Running Windows 7 Professional, Windows 8.1

It’s no trick.

Microsoft, on Halloween day, announced it will no longer provide licenses for Windows 7 Professional and Windows 8.1 to manufacturers or its partners.

That means, once stores run out of their current stock of PCs running Windows 7 Professional or 8.1, they will officially be extinct. Only PCs running Windows 10 will be available for purchase.

Check out the chart below.

The move should come as no surprise. Microsoft had already ended mainstream support for Windows 7 last year. And while support is still offered for Windows 8, Microsoft is eager to get as many PCs as possible running the latest version of Windows.

Windows 7 has, by far, been Microsoft’s most-used browser. As of October, the market share of computers still running Windows 7 sat at a whopping 48 percent, while Windows 10 holds just 22.6 percent of the market. Windows 8.1 came in third with 8.4 percent behind Windows XP which still had a 8.2 percent share. Windows 8 had a 2.2 percent share.

Windows 8.1 has never really caught on, despite being around since October 2013. The software addressed many of users’ concerns with Windows 8. The update brought back the Start button, provided shortcuts to commands and apps and offered the ability to boot to the traditional desktop layout. Other changes included two new tile sizes (large and small) and the ability to sync customizations, apps and files across all Windows 8.1 devices.

Yet, still, Windows 7 has remained the operating system of choice.

Microsoft’s move yesterday to discontinue the sale of PCs running Windows 7 Professional or 8.1 will certainly push Windows 10 adoption rates up.
