(Before It's News)

Qualcomm is teaming up with Samsung to build a new mobile processor for the next generation of high-end handsets.

qualcomm-snapdragonQualcomm, which is known for its hugely successful 820/821 processor series, today announced its upcoming processor: Snapdragon 835. The U.S. tech firm will work with the Samsung, using the South Korean company’s 10-nanometer FinFET process to produce its latest flagship chip.

“We are excited to continue working together with Samsung in developing products that lead the mobile industry,” Qualcomm senior vice-president of product management Keith Kressin said in a press release. “Using the new 10nm process node is expected to allow our premium tier Snapdragon 835 processor to deliver greater power efficiency and increase performance while also allowing us to add a number of new capabilities that can improve the user experience of tomorrow’s mobile devices.”

Samsung’s 10-nanometer FinFET process delivers as much as 30 percent more area efficiency and up to 40 percent less power consumption over its previously used method. Using 10nm FinFET, the Snapdragon 835 processor will be a smaller chip which gives phone makers more space for larger batteries or the ability to create slimmer designs. The combination of a more efficient production process with a more advanced chip design is expected to result in battery life improvements.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to work closely with Qualcomm Technologies in producing the Snapdragon 835 using our 10nm FinFET technology,” Samsung executive vice-president and head of foundry business Jong Shik Yoon said. “This collaboration is an important milestone for our foundry business as it signifies confidence in Samsung’s leading chip process technology.”

Snapdragon 835 is currently in production and is expected to ship in commercial devices in the first half of next year.
