Facebook wants to be more than your social network of choice, it wants to be your weatherman too.
The social media site is rolling out a weather app for most iOS and Android and will roll out a desktop version next month.
Some Android and iOS users have discovered the weather app in their Facebook app’s hamburger menu. According to Mashable, the mobile app offers users an hour-by-hour weather forecast for the current day and a forecast for the five following days, with weather data courtesy of Weather.com’s API. Users can customize their locations in settings and can choose from Celsius and Fahrenheit.
Facebook told the publication via e-mail that, beginning this week, weather updates will appear on top of the News Feed on both desktop and mobile. Those updates will include a five-day forecast. Users will have the option to turn the notifications on and off.
A Facebook spokeswoman told Mashable the weather app is part of Facebook’s Goodwill initiative.
She said the goal of the app “is to develop products that connect people to the things they care about most and create moments of joy in people’s day, like simply telling you that it’s going to rain later.”
